Paul Scholven 421 967 (V)

This soldier fought with 13./SS-PolRgt. 1 as a Zugführer and then was Chef 10./SS-Pz.GR 9. Sources vary about his date of birth, either 31.01.1916 or 30.01.1918. He was wounded in January 1942 at which time he is listed as both Oberleutnant and SS-Ostuf.

On 20.04.1944 he was promoted to SS-Hauptsturmführer and it is in this rank he is awarded the DKiG in January 1945.

Can anyone supply any other details of this subject. For example where was he born (he was not vetted by the authorities for his Aryan credentials)? When did he join the 9. SS-Panzergrenadiers?

This is excellent, many thanks chaps. It looks like he was with the Polizei-Division for most of the war, possibly not joining Wiking until October 1944. He is listed as fuhrer and also chef of 10 Kompanie when he receives the DKiG.

Its odd that he is in the army doing his national service in 1936-38 before joining the Schutzpolizei. I wonder if he was in the military police for the period 1936-38?

Sorry, I missed out that he was with Wiking when it was with Kampfgruppe Mühlenkamp in Poland in July 1944.

Paul Scholven was WIA at the start of April 1943. After his recivery he was assigned to Wiking in July 1944. His bio can be found in Mark Yerger's DKiG-series in Volume 8.

Thanks Pena, but Marks book is not available through Amazon at the moment so I am in the dark about his career. How detailed is the biography. does it go into fine detail about his early military career?

best regards

The bio has three pages (227-229).
Page 227 covers his ranks, decorations and time before posted to "Wiking".
Page 228 covers first his time in "Wiking" and then his recommendation for the DKiG.
Page 229 covers the rest of the recommendation and a picturce of the recommendation.
If Amazon doesn't have the book try to find it somewhere else. It is worth the search!

Cheers Pena, sounds like a good idea. Do you have any of the others, if so I assume you have some of the others and they are equally good? My trouble is that I collect complete sets and it looks like thats about £1000 ;(

Keith,

I have all of them (Volumes 1 to 8) in addition to the latest Totenkopf books (Volumes 1 and 2 and one more to be published). The Totenkopf books are related to the DKiG-series but are larger in size (almost too large!). For example Totenkopf 2 - which I haven't finished yet - has 366 large format pages.

Collect them one by one. :) If I carry on like this I think Mark will nominate me to be his marketing manager. :D

All the best,

Pena

PS Take a look what Mark has written in AHF and you get a good understanding what's in the books.

If you don't want to buy Mark's whole set then you can buy John P. Moore's Führerliste der Waffen-SS where the files of all holders of the KC and GCiG (and GCiS) are reproduced.

Thanks chaps I will follow your direction.

I think Scholven joined Germania earlier than July. The 3rd battalion rejoined the division from Germany sometime between March and April, taking part in the relief of Kovel. It would make sense that Scholven came with the battalion from Germany where he had been recovering and possibly re-training.

Also, Scholven was seriously wounded on 3 January 1945 at Tarjan while serving as acting battalion commander of III./Germania during the first relief attempt of Budapest, Konrad I. He died in hospital, most likely due to infection, in March 1945. Source: Wiking Division TruKa.
