Walter Hofmann (Sonderkommando 1b)
Walter Hofmann (Sonderkommando 1b)
Hi,
I´m trying to find some detailed biographic information (carrer, pictures etc.) about (Dr.?) Walter HOFMANN:
During my investigations I came across this forum, which is great and already helped me a lot.
So far I got:
Kommandoführer Sonderkommando 1b (Einsatzgruppe C) (als Stellvertreter, Jan-Mrz 1942)
SS-Nr. 99210
NDSAP Nr. 1821949
SS-Sturmbannführer
Date of Birth: 26.9.1905
Could someone provide more detailed information or give some hints where I may find more?
Many thanks!
Heinz

Hi,
@Andrey: Thanks! @Georges: Thanks. Yes, true, SK 1b is EGr. A.
According to http://www.holocaustresearchproject.org ... tzcorg.jpg
he was also "Leiter Abt. IV (Gestapo)" in and deputy commander of Einsatzgruppe C.
Any ideas where I could find more detailed information? Anyone some hints for me where i can start to dig deeper and may find more information? It would be much appreciated. Can´t believe that there is nothing more to find about him.
Many thanks

Hi,
could some one give me any book recommendations or a hint to other sources I may find more?
I thought about "The Field Men: The SS Officers Who Led the Einsatzkommandos - The Nazi Mobile Killing Units (Schiffer Military History", but I´m not sure if it really covers these guys from the second row also in-depth.
Thanks!

Re: Walter Hofmann (Sonderkommando 1b)
Hofmann was Stapoleiter Lüneburg before his Osteinsatz.
Interesting aspect about his career is his promotion to SS-Stubaf. on 10 Sept 1939 and that was his ceiling. Possibly he was believed too "soft" in the East. Incidentally I have him as "Dr." but Dienstaltersliste List 9 Nov 1944 does not mention it.
Probably need to go through his SSO and RuS (Berlin Document Center) files to confirm this.
Committed suicide at Flensburg, 13 May 1945.
Publications about him are something of a black hole.

Thanks!
Do you know how to get access to these? Is that possible at all for non-relatives?steve248 wrote:Probably need to go through his SSO and RuS (Berlin Document Center) files to confirm this.
Re: Walter Hofmann (Sonderkommando 1b)
Just turn up at the Bundesarchiv on Finckensteinallee (you cannot miss it, though it is opposite the end of Kadettenweg).
If you are related to Hofmann do not say this. Do not mention his name to anyone.
You will be required to fill in a small questionnaire in which you will need to state a research topic and what you intend to do with the material. You can tick the boxes as you wish. No one will ask for further information.
At this point tell them you need to look at the microfilms of the Berlin Document Center. You will be directed to the Mikrofilmsaal, down the long corridor. Once you arrive you complete a small slip quoting the film you want to see: one slip per film. If Walter Hofmann was correctly filmed you want "SS-Officer 105A" - if he was put with Hoffmann, you want film "SS-Officer 105A". Sit at any of the unoccupied microfilm readers. Go early, it gets full by lunchtime. Make sure your microfilm reader has a printer with it. Ask for a "counter plug" and you can print as many pages as you want. 20 Euro cents a page. Pay when you finish.
You will need help finding the roll RuS roll for Walter Hofmann.

Re: Walter Hofmann (Sonderkommando 1b)
in various Dienstalterlisten (1938, 1942, 1943, 1944) as well Befehlsblatt der CSSD entries from 1940,1941 and 1942 never mention of Dr. rank.
From 1940 to 1941 he was non commissionned Leiter Stapo Stelle Lüneburg. BBL 10/1941 mention confirmed Stapo Leiter Lüneburg.
after return from EG duties he was appointed next to Stapo (L) Stelle Hamburg.
Then on 1942 he was abg. zum Gauleitung Ost-Hannover (?) BBL 42/1942.

Re: Walter Hofmann (Sonderkommando 1b)
Thanks, both!
Steve, I will be in Berlin in a few weeks and will definitely give this a try - sounds very promising!

Re: Walter Hofmann (Sonderkommando 1b)
small error in post about the microfilm rolls.
If Walter Hofmann was filed as Walter Hoffmann, this is roll "SS-Officer 109A"
I found the reference that said Walter Hofmann was a "Dr." - a postwar interrogation of Karl Hennicke, who had been Leiter III at BdS Kiew.

Steve, I will go to Berlin next week and hopefully be able to visit the Bundesarchiv.
What did you mean exactly with:
And what do think how much time should I plan for the research on site? I don´t have any expirience about how long this could take.
Thanks for your opinion!

Re: Walter Hofmann (Sonderkommando 1b)
You can find a list of the SS officer rolls here on line:
http://www.stengerhistorica.com/Archiva ... rIndex.pdf
As you can see, about 990 rolls
The RusS (Rasse- und Siedlungs) microfilm rolls are possibly 5,000.
The staff in the Mikrofilmsaal or back in the main Lesesaal can help you sought out which film(s) you might want using the computer Finding Aid and the name of Walter Hofmann. Do not explain or mention if he is a relation. Just a person of interest IF asked.
