J. Peiper, Other SS men and the NSDAP

Become adults, some SS men joined the Party very early, some delayed (and thus sometimes were "politically correct"), some did not join. Observe the following pages, and the two post war Waffen SS unit history authors on page 437 of the December 1938 list. Also on this page, Max Wunsche is not listed as a Party member. Note in these pages from the Berlin Document Center the dates joined, early, late, never and ponder what was going on . . .

Two figures to consider regarding political correctness. See my June 19, 2017 post on Michael Wittmann showing his SS and Party numbers.

Two other men. Karl Kloskowski was so superior as a Panzerman that he did not need to join the Party.

Both Peiper and Wünsche were enrolled as party members at the same time in March 1938. Peipers number per Danny Parker in 'Hitler's Warrior' was #5 508 134. Wünsche's was #5 508 247. (as you can see their numbers are quite close). I have seen the listing with Peiper's name on it, but cannot now find this in my files (I have no doubt there are other members of the forum who have this page).

This date coincides with both leaving Lichterfelde to assume their duties with Himmler and Hitler and therefore it may have been done automatically. In my opinion whether they had or had not a party number is a moot point other than in relation to setting the historical record straight as neither made any secret of their allegiance to the tenants of National Socialism.

Above I posted documents that give Peiper's SS and NSDAP #, so Parker's book is not needed to see these. Parker does state that Peiper and Wunsche were rivals. The SS men posted about had various attitudes and behaved differently. For example, Poetschke and others with 1914 birthdates and their conduct before, during and (for those still alive) after WW II.

I think the point is that Parker and Westemeier established long ago that Peiper was a party member. There is a topic about this in this forum dating back to 2007 in which Jerome Georges posted a 1938 list of LSSAH men who joined the NSDAP which can be found at NARA. During the mid 1930's there was a stop on new members. Hence Peiper could not join the party until the stop was lifted. As soon as this happened he applied for NSDAP membership - he send in the forms on December 10, 1937, and was accepted on March 3, 1938, together with thousands of other SS members including 1,400 LSSAH men. Peiper's name is on page 36 of the list of LSSAH party members from 1938 (details courtesy of Jens Westemeier).
