unknown member of our family

Post by heckel6 » 22 May 2018, 21:17

I have recently come across these photos whilst clearing my father in law's house. His father was from Haimendorf in Bavaria and we believe this is one of his cousins and his father. We have no names as the SS officer in the photo has been omitted from the family tree. We believe the man in the world war 1 photo is his father and his mother was called Babette Heckel. We are not sure which of her two husbands is her son's father and so have reached a dead end in identifying him. Can anyone help?

The soldier is an SS-Oberscharführer and an officer aspirant, a Sergeant. He appears to wear the ribbons of the KVK II m Schw and the Ostmedaille.

Not being very familiar with this topic can you tell me a bit about these awards and what they may have been awarded for please?

I have no Heckels but several Schillings.
Schillings born in Hammelburg, Nürnberg-Fürth and Würzburg.
But... a little more information to accurately identify the SS-Oschaf.

A dead end? Really? I suggest you´re visiting the civil registry office of Haimendorf and do a serious research. I bet there you can find an entry for their marriage and entries about descendants.

I would love to visit Haimendorf to search, but sadly live in the UK and this is not an option at present. Thanks for the thought though!

Heckel6 it´s your location "Bavaria and Germany" which fooled me. Anyway, I suggest you contact them via e-mail and ask for help, if you had not done this yet.
I ´ve done the same to research my family and found siblings of my grandmother NO ONE in the whole village knew. But in my case it´s because they died at very young age before my granny was born.

Haimenbach is nowadays a district/part of the city Röthenbach an der Pegnitz, I think the best is to contact them by their official website:
https://www.roethenbach.de/kontakt.html
Fill in your name and last name, your location, e-mail adress and your message (Ihre Nachricht), and then click on "Anfrage abschicken (= send request).
Good luck!

Röthlein, Eugen
SS-Ostuf.
born 26 April 1916 Nürnberg

SS # 473 805 (V)
Not a member of NSDAP
SS-Oscha. with 2./Nachr.Abt.3 in Feb 1942
promoted SS-Ostuf on 9 Nov 1944
SS- Ostuf with SS-Nachr.Ausb.Abt.3 in Nov 1944

A perfect match with the insignia of the Totenkopf Division, a communications specialist.

Info from JP Moore Führerliste and other sources. These are very nice photos, thanks for sharing.

Where would I find further information about the actions Eugen was involved in?
