Recently i posted some requests for help researching a family member who was in the SS, since which i have contacted NARA in the US who hold documents from Berlin on microfilm, i have been succesfull in finding a file on the person i am researching under the section of "Race and settlement, Main Office" so hopefully this could throw up some interesting stuff, if anyone else wants to contact this office the email address is: [email protected]

Hi Annelie, i cant really tell you any more at the moment until i have payed $39 and recieved the file, this can take 4-5 weeks for a US resident and longer for us Europeans but im assuming that it has to do with his selection process and family history to prove his racial purity, i believe that early war only 15 out of 100 who applied were found suitable and that they had to prove no Jewish ancestry back to 1800 for enlisted men and 1750 for officers, will keep you posted on what i find out.

RuSHA files are from applications to have permission to marry. Includes a family history, handwritten self done biography of the person and a photo for SS records.

Mark or Brian:

Do you happen to know if there is such a file for those other than
SS
(files are from applications to have persmission to marry.
Includes a family history, handwritten self done biography of the person
and a photo for SS records.)

NARA only holds SS related documents i believe, i think for anything else you would have to write to the WasT, not sure what documents were kept on the rank and file because my Grandfathers file only contains his units he served with and dates, same goes for my great grandfathers except 1 who has red cross info because he was MIA.

There are some SA and military files at NARS but the types of documents are different and files not as complete. A full RuSHA file is some 5-6 pages and would have:

1 sheet of current posting and general service history information, dates are details generally superficial.

Family history with parents names, grandparents, etc.

Lebennlauf, a 1 or at most 2 page handwritten biography written by the individual

1 photo page if it exists, some are blank. A full sheethas a full length photo, profile of head and straight on shot of head.

One big thing:

Many documents in a file conflict dates, assignments, etc. You need other data sources for accurate bios, including the person before and after at a given assignment. Berlin did not keep up with changes in the fileld recording files and many things happended that were important for the person but missed by the bean counters in Berlin.

Hallo Mark,

Can I consider this also as a reply to my latest request in the Biographical Research Forum? :)

Cheers,
Timo
