Günter Gils, SS-Pz. GR Rgt. 46
Günter Gils, SS-Pz. GR Rgt. 46
John Moore's Führerliste has Günter Gils KIA with this unit on 1 Feb. 1944 when SS-Ustuf.
He was born 4 Oct. 1913.
What division was this unit a part of and anyone further details on Gils other than John Moore's listing
I think Gils had an earlier career with BdS Den Haag, Referent III C (SD) when SS-Hstuf.
Gils may have held a doctorate - in what?

Steve,
the 46th SS-Freiw.Gren.Rgt was subordinate to the 20th Waffen-Gren.Div. der SS (1st Est.).

Re: Günter Gils, SS-Pz. GR Rgt. 46
Hi Steve and Stuart,
In my 2002 edition of John P. Moore´s Führerliste I have Günter Gils as the Adjutant of SS-Pz. Gren. Rgt. 48 (not 46). So apparently he was in the 4. SS-Frw. Pz. Gren. Brigade "Nederland", and not in the Estonian division. According to the list he was an Ustuf. when he died on 01.02.1944. A bit strange that he had an earlier career as an SD officer with a Hstuf. rank. Was that an Allgemeine SS rank? Or was he demoted? Two different persons maybe? Typing error?
Best regards,
Frans

Re: Günter Gils, SS-Pz. GR Rgt. 46
Frans you are correct. It was my mistake in misreading the entry. Then I identified him with the Dutch unit and probably died at the Narva bridgehead.
His position with BdS Den Haag as a SD officer would have been with the Allgemeine SS. Such officers did not always receive a similar rank in the Waffen-SS.
My initial information about Gils came from the interrogation of another SD officer with BdS Den Haag who said Gils had died in the East.
I knew that he had not been with the Sipo-SD Einsatzgruppen so could only have been with the Waffen-SS or the army. John Moore's listing then completed the identification.

Re: Günter Gils, SS-Pz. GR Rgt. 46
Günther Gils was at least attached to 11./Frw.Leg.Ndl. in April 1943, so the position in SS-Frw.Pz.Gren.Rgt.48 in 1944 is logical. Previously Günther attended the Junkerschule at Bad Tölz (1942). So the question is when he was with BdS Den Haag.

By the way, Günter Gils was killed during the retreat from the Oranienbaumkessel to Narwa near Keikino (some kilometres Northeast of Narwa).

With BdS Den Haag, Abt III C (SD) possibly 1940-1942 is the best dates I can find.
