Ernst Sachs entered Eisenbahn-Regiment Nr. 1 as a Fahnenjunker on the 10th of March 1900. He was commissioned on the 18th of August 1901 with seniority from the 19th of August 1900. By the outbreak of the First World War he was serving in Telegraphen-Bataillon Nr. 1. He final appointment during the war was on the staff of the Prussian War Ministry. After acceptance into the Reichsheer he served in Nachrichten-Abteilung 5 followed by an assignment to the War Ministry as the leader of the communications office. In 1924 he was on the staff on Gruppenkommando 1 and commanded Nachrichten-Abteilung 1 from 1st December 1926 - 1 May 1929. He was the long time commander of the signals school (initially as part of the artillery school). He retired with the Charakter Rank of Generalleutnant on the 1st of October 1935.
