DU Verfahren - meaning of this?

#1

Post by stoveb » 03 Aug 2022, 22:59

Hi,

I received the SSEM file of an Albert Ruckriegel, where he faced a DU Verfahren while in hospital. He was later released from the Waffen-SS in July 1943.

Can anyone tell me what the DU stands for? Dienst-Unfähigkeit?

Thanks
Steve

Hello Steve,
yes, DU stands for "Dienstunfähigkeit" or Dienst-Unfähigkeit".
Please take a look here.

Hi stoveb,

there is a slightly longer article in German on this topic that might be of interest to you:

Krank durch den Krieg? Der Umgang mit psychisch kranken Veteranen in Deutschland in der Zeit der Weltkriege
Sick from the war? Dealing with mentally ill veterans in Germany during the World Wars

A lot of text, an online translation into English is available here...
