Juhan Tuuling - born on 12th April 1897, died on 23rd October 1946 in Copenhagen, Denmark
Sry, no info about his carreer during WWI and Estonian War of Independence.
From 1924 (or even earlier) Estonian Military High School - Commander of tha cadet's company until 1928 (rank - Major),
after it commander of 1st Battalion in 7th Infantry Regiment,
then from 1934 Commander of 8th Independent Infantry Battalion (8. Üksik Jalaväe Pataljon).
His final command in the forces of independent Estonia was the Tallinn Guard Battalion (Vahipataljon).
Last rank in Estonian Army - Colonel (promoted 24th February 1940).
Sry, no info what he did on 1940/41.
Freiwilligen-Standartenführer, Kdr. SS-Grenadier-Regiment 46, 20.Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (estnische Nr. 1): until 26. Jul. 1944 (Relieved after unsuccesful retreat of his Regiment from Narva river to Tannenberg line).

Paul Vent (earlier also his name was written Vendt) - born on 11th February 1900, falled in September or November 1944 in Estonia?
Estonian Cross of Freedom II/3, but sry, no info about his carreer in WWI and in Estonian War of Independence.
Long time served in Cavalry Regiment in Tartu, on maintainance and as Head of Rear
Last rank in Estonian Army - Major
When Estonian Army was reformed to 22nd Rifle Corps in Red Army, major Paul Vent was nominated as head of Rear for 182nd Division (in Tartu). While Division was moved from Estonia to Pskov are - stayed in Estonia and waited for Germans.
Freiwilligen-Obersturmbannführer, Kdr. SS-Grenadier-Regiment 45, 20.Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (estnische Nr. 1):
Kampfgruppe Vent commander (Kampfgruppe was formed on 14th August 1944 from 3 battallions of 20.Waffen-Grenadier-Division, I/45; I and II/46 to held back Soviet attack from south of Estonia). Retreated with battles with his Kampfgruppe from south of Estonia to river Emajõgi.
There are confusing stories about Paul Vent faith. According to some he was killed on 17th September 1944 when Red Army crossed Emajõgi and started final assault on Tallinn. According others he was just lost during the battle, remained in Estonia, and falled in some forest battle in south of Estonian in November 1944. Officially lost in the battle 17th September 1944. Kampfgruppe Vent was encircled with some other Estonian and German units, just small groups broke through..

That was all the info i had handy. Hope it helps...

Do you need some other details? I can also look some more sources what i don't have at home now.

In my sources Colonel Vent fallen to the russian 108. corpus when Kampfgruppe Vent tried to stop russians. Vent had only 3 dry up battalions and there was even handfighting. But russians had majority and Kampfgruppe Vent had to wthdraw. Colonel Vent himself fallen to russians in his headquater during withdraw.

yep, has much as i have seen the battle descriptions of 17th September - remains of those 3 batallions were overrun so quickly that survivors have told: whole HQ of Kampfgruppe Vent was killed. There was no commanding for survived groups. All who got out did it independently.

But, in Vello Salo "Faith of Estonian Cadre Officers" date of death for Paul Vent is November 1944.

On www-site about Estonian guerilla movement http://www.rk.ee/metsavennad/langenud/uus.html there is mentioned about Colonel Paul Vent - was killed in November 1944 in South of Estonia, source O.Tammark, who said that Vent was inprisoned on 17th September 1944.

Thank you Nublu & Unterkron for the amazing info! :) Bytheway, do you have any pictures of Tuuling or Vent in SS-Uniforms? Also I read somewhere that Tuuling was relieved of his command cause he was to old to lead a regiment and was attached to the staff of III. SS-Pz Corps instead..

You can say it also so

Situation was as follows. Germans planned to leave Narva river line and take the positions on Tannenberg line. But Russians launched their attack on very same day when Germans planned this retreat. Heavy artillery and tanks were aleady drawn back. Other artillery pieces and granade launchers what were still left on positions had minimal ammount of ammunition.

So, units were noy able to stop Russian attack, All the units had to fight their way out. There were many encirclement attempts, but they were all broken. Etc etc.

Tuuling lost contact with his Battallions. And overall control on situation. Battallions fought independently and most of the men get out. But all artillery and other heavy equipment were left behind.

So, he was retired from the Regiment as «too old to Command», and sent to HQ duty.

And both his Regiment's Battallions were included into Kampfgruppe Vent, together with 1st Battallion of Vent's own Regiment just few weeks later.
