The camp building commenced in March 1942, in a sparsely populated village, which numbered around 1000 inhabitants. The area was dense woods and swampy.
Following a visit by a small aircraft, that circled over the village, several days later a railway carriage arrived with two SS officers, construction engineers from the SS-Zentralbauleitung in Zamosc. Thomalla, the construction expert for Action Reinhard, and construction supervisor Moser. The two men walked around the station, took measurements and entered the forest on the other side of the tracks. Close to the railway station buildings was a spur that was included in the camp site and was used for disembarkation of the transports. In the area selected for the camp two wooden buildings existed - a former forester's house, and a two-storey post office.
As construction work (by 80 Jews from nearby ghettos) progressed, the site was inspected by a commission led by SS-Hauptsturmführer Naumann, head of the Central Construction Office of the Waffen-SS and police in Lublin. Once the Jews had completed the initial construction phase, they were shot.
In April 1942 SS-Obersturmführer Franz Stangl was appointed as commander of Sobibor to speed up the construction work, which had fallen behind schedule. Stangl visited Wirth in Belzec death camp, following orders from Globocnik to obtain guidance and experience, in order to prepare Sobibor for its future role within Action Reinhard.
After Stangl's arrival in Sobibor, the building of the camp was accelerated.

Hello again,
Many thanks for the info I have gotten from you.
In some cases I have made some easy faults as Liebenschel in Majdanek.
But I also want to thank you Chrich for providing the info on the "sucessor" for Amon Göth in Platzow.
I also have to revid. the Kommandant list for KL Dachau,
Alexander Reiner was never Kommandant at KL Dachau,
and as well was never Berthold Maack Kommandant of that
camp either. (Source Archive Gedenkstätte KL Dachau)
Best regards,
Georg

Hallo JW
Amersfoort was mentioned twofold as KL or as Durchgangslager (transit lager)
- Das System der Konzentrationslager (NS map from 1944)
- Coenraad J. F. Stuldreher: "Deutsche Konzentrationslager in den Niederlanden. Amersfoort, Westerbork, Herzogenbusch", 1994

Amersfoort was a "Polizeiliches Durchgangslager" under jurisdiction of BdS in Den Haag, Holland. Not an official KL that fell under WVHA.Hagall wrote:

The only official KL in Holland was KL Herzogenbusch, also known as Vught.
