Auffanglager Breendonk in Belgium.

Kommandant - Sturmbannführer Philip Schmitt.

http://www.breendonk.be/index.htm

"The former internees of Breendonck, many of whom have experienced the concentration camps in Germany, Buchenwald, Neuengamme, Oranienburg, state that, generally speaking, the conditions prevailing at Breendonck as regards discipline and food, were worse. They add that, in the camps in Germany which were more crowded, they felt less under the domination of their guards, and had the feeling that their lives were less in danger."

Thanks.

Hi,

Who could explain to me why on earth you have a such difference in ranks for the same position???

Isn't there any mistake?

When the camp opened a Hstuf was appointed, in the early years it was a bit of an unknown quantity.

Eicke was Officer Commanding the entire TK-Verbände.

With wartime the situation changed, many senior ranks moved to posts with Eicke in the T-Div or elsewhere and most KL kommandants (larger camps) were Ostubaf or Stubaf with occasionally Hstuf.

I have been able to visit many KL museums across Europe over the years. For those of you who may not have the opportunity to visit the sites of some of the KL, here is a selection of some photos of Mauthausen KL as it appeared in 1997.
Mauthausen 1 shows the water storage facility outside the main entrance to the camp which is on the right.
Mauthausen 2 shows the main gate. The iron support bars, for the large eagle and swastika which adorned the gate and which was ceremoniously pulled down by the inmates on liberation, are still visible.
Mauthausen 4 shows the guard tower overlooking the main gate (right). This image was taken from inside.
Mauthausen 3 is at the far end of the main entrance parade ground, opposite the main gate. It shows the motor pool below the Kommandantur. The balcony walkway outside the Kommandantur is the site of the famous photo of the guards.
Mauthausen 5 shows the Appelplatz inside the inner camp gate. The building at rear is now the museum.
Mauthausen 6 shows the quarry with the steps leading down to it.
Regards,
Max
