SS-Standartenführer Langsdorff

Post by c.g. » 10 Feb 2004 22:34

I am interested in this officer: Langsdorff, Prof. Dr. Alexander, born 14.12.1898. He headed the "Art Protection" section of the Military Administration Deprtment in the staff of the Bevollmächtigter General in Italien. He received the DKS.
Anything on his history - SS and academic - before being sent to Italy?
Thanks in advance
C.G.

Here's a brief biographical sketch of Dr. Langsdorff. Sources include Mark C. Yerger's German Cross in Silver Holders of the SS and Police (Bender Publishing, 2002) and Führerliste der Waffen-SS (CD-Rom set by John P. Moore, 2nd Edition, 2003).

Best wishes,
~ Mike Miller / ABR

Hello,

here's a photo of Langsdorff while delivering a lecture on archeology to members of the Leibstandarte in 1935.

Quite possible. Here's a 1912 photo of Hans Langsdorff (Source: http://www.grafspee.com/gallery.html ).

Alexander Langsdorff died on 10-3-1946 in Eutin.
He was either killed or he killed himself in his parents house, something that we'll probably never know for sure....

Mike

My name is Mareile Langsdorff Claus, I am the daughter of Prof. Dr. Alexander Langsdorff, and I want to correct some inputs of Mike.
My father married for the first time 1931 and divorced on October 2, 1940. He remarried on January 7, 1941, Mrs. Marie-Luise Schneidewind, born Stockmann (10.10.1917-22.08.1984). It is correct that they had a son, Peter Desiré, but also a daughter (me), born 11.10.1943 in Berlin.
He was posted from January 15 to June 24, 1941, in Paris.
My father was fluent not only in French and English, but also in Italian.
My father was in charge of the protection of art in Italy from February 1944 until April 30, 1945, according to the last entry of his diary.
He died: 15.03.1946 (and not on 10.03.1946) in the hospital in Eutin of a pulmonary embolism (and not at home, and he did not kill himself).
The commander of the "Graf Spee", Hans Langsdorff, was his cousin.

Hello Mareile,
Welcome to this forum indeed. Thanks for giving us his correct DoB and the precise circumstances he passed away. I only told what I've read somewhere so don't blame me for putting false info on this forum about your fathers death, it's obvious the info that I've read was not correct at all. So thanks again for the correction, it's highly appreciated.

Greetings, Mike

It's ok, Mike, I don't blame you at all. I knew that there are wrong informations about my father published in various sources. I just wanted to correct what I know for sure. Don't forget, my father died on March 15, 1946, and I was only 2 1/2 years old. I can't remember him, but I have asked my mother again and again about him, and she told me a lot about him. And now very recently I was able to transform the 4 volumes of his diary from Sütterlin into latin letters. Of course this was another discovery for me and very interesting.
Greetings, Mareile

Hallo...
I'm Italian and I've been making researches on the protection of Italian cultural heritage in the second world war for many years. I'm going to speak in a congress on the work of Kunstschutz and for me it would be very important to get in touch with Mareile Langsdorff Claus. I really hope she can read this post... This forum has been very interesting to me.
