I have a number of letters from Ernst Kemper in the papers of the former Sturmbannführer Herbert Schmeißer, who served with Kemper in "Wiking" and remained a close friend after the wae. Here is a letterhead thatthat was on the back of a letter from Kemper in 1976. Kemper was president of the Reichsverband der Soldaten.

Here is the text of the letter from the other side. Kemper uses Schmeißer's nickname of "Katta" and "Bobby" is Fritz Schütter. They are planning the outline of the book to be authored by Schütter, "Männer der Waffen-SS".

On 2 september 1944, Metz became Festung Metz.
Kemper and his school were incorporated as "reserve of the Fortress Metz"

Kemper took over the south area with a group including :
- 2 bataillons of instruction of the 462 ID including 282 inf bat (bataillon Vogt)
- 1 bataillon of 4 compagnies of Nach Schule der Waffen SS known as Bataillon "Berg"

on 8 september 44, the area came under XIII SS AK of Hermann Priess and Kemper went under authority of the 17 SS Gotz with 37e SS Pz Gr Rgt until he left Metz.

John Do you know why Ernst Kemper was / Is listed as MIA? According to DRK he was MIA in march 1944. Become he a POW or? I know that many who went missing later returned home after that Adenauer had been to Moscow 1955 and made a treaty that their soldiers would get a amnestie and return home to Germany. Was Kemper one of them?

Best regards
Georg

Much of the DRK information is NOT correct. In March 1944 Ernst Kemper was commanding the SS signal school at Metz, France and in Leitmeritz, Czecho in 1945. After the war he was an American POW and lived many years in retirement in Germany. I know this to be true from his personnel file, his wartime comrades and two of his sons that I am in contact with.

Thanks John, I suspected something like that. I know that the DRK has its fault but I still think it some nice source to look at. And I know that before they valued the DRK listen very much at different meetings for the SS-Veterans

Best regards
Georg
