Ludger~

5/II/Standarte 13 = 5.Sturm / II.Sturmbann / SS-Standarte 13

3/III Standarte 13 = 3.Sturm / III.Sturmbann / SS-Standarte 13 (I think Phil meant to put a "/" after the "III" in this one).

Best,

May I correct you: I think you meant annexed or attached. There is a big difference between these terms. Northern France was occupied (meaning that the country had foreign troops on her soil but was still self-ruled) whereas Alsace-Lorraine (and Flanders?) was annexed. Annexion implies that the land and its administration belongs to another country (in the case of Alsace-Lorraine, furthermore stipulated by treaty).

Willab,

y'r right.
Moselle (french departement of Lorraine) was "de facto" annexed to Germany but never "de jure".
That's why Lothringen was not purely annexed to Reichsgau Westmark but annexed as Zivilverwaltung Lothringen.
Burckel was Gauleiter und Reichstatthalter Westmark u Chef der Zivilverwaltung in Lothringen.

German retreated from Metz in september 1944. So he returned to Saarbrücken.

In the prosecution act against Dr. Dietrich (Polizeipräsident Saarbrücken and other defendants including Stemmler) from 1.2.1947 it's written than Stroop put him at disposal of Dr. Dietrich. He reported than "around 31 july 1944" while in Saarbrücken he received order from Dr. Dietrich to pick up 4 US flyer and shot him while escaping. He gave orders to shot them and reported to Dr. Dietrich; it's written that Stemmler commanded Allgemeine-SS in the area of Saarbrücken.
So it seems Stemmler was a new CO of 85. SS-Standarte at this date. An officer of this unit was involved in the killing (SS-Ustuf. Karl Hunsickel)
Best regards

Georges
