Dear Michael

On this list of highranked SS-Officer you have also to add Reichsführer SS Karl Hanke, even he did not took the duties. He was killed in 1945.

Greetings

Dear Thomas~

You have quickly become my best proofreader- very valuable and much needed corrections. Thank you!

Yes, Harster was released by the Dutch in 1953, not 1963.

And Karl Hanke should indeed be on this list.

Best wishes,

Names of High-Ranking SS Officers who Died '33-45

#20

SS Oberfuehrer and Swords holder Helmut Doerner isn't on this list (he was KIA near Budapest 11 Feb. '45). I also noticed Doerner's biographical information does not appear on the "SS-Oberfuehrer" listing. I've been doing research on Doerner in German language sources and would be happy to share it with you.

Harster

#21

Post by Phil Nix » 05 Jan 2003, 13:34

To Mike
Re Harster. I am certainly not trying to condone what these desk born men did but I am trying to understand what it was like then not what we think now. A friend who used to visit Hamburg told me that people (even Jewish people) who remember thought very highly of the Reichsstatthalter Karl Kaufmann because although he was ultimately responsible for sending Hamburg,s Jews to their deaths they felt that he hated doing it but they all lived under a regime where such things were everyday events and could not be stopped. We must remember that the allies would not do anything to stop such actions even though they knew what was going on. An SS Of Dr Joachim Caeser worked at Auschwitz running a biology centre using prisoner labour he obviously knew what was going on in the rest of the camp but survivors refused to testify against him after the war seing his farm system as a haven away from the killings. So should we judge from the standpoint of 2003 or try to understand what is was like then?.
Wahat does anyone else think

Rediess

#22

Post by Bjørn from Norway » 05 Jan 2003, 20:26

Hello!
A small correction:

"* Wilhelm Rediess
SS-Obergruppenführer
und General der Waffen-SS und Polizei / M.d.R.

Born: 10. Oct. 1900 in Heinsberg / Rheinland.
Suicide: 8. / 9. May 1945
(by explosive charge, along with Reichskommissar
Terboven, Castle Skaugum, Oslo). "

Rediess shot himself during the night. Terboven made arrangements to have his dead body placed in the small pillbox where the explosives were placed. Skaugum is no castle either, it was the private house of Kronprins Olav.

I have not read them myself but I understand that most regard them as fiction, I'm a huge fan of the books published by Bender but I'm goinging to stay away from those.

I'm reading it now. What can I say? Looks convisingly enough, and reads very very interesting.
