Well I can tell you that he died in Kempton Germany in 1976 or 77, not sure of the year. I last saw him in 1972 and he died a few years later. As for his birth I believe he was born in the Cologne area, I have the information at home and will post it later . Here is a picture of my uncle in uniform, Wilhelm Stockmann. I love the site and have enjoyed viewing all the old photos that everyone has posted. I only wish I had more to add but am affriad that I do not have many. Have a great day gents and thanks again for sharing all this information on my grandfather.

Hey Mike, I just spoke with my father and he has two possible birth places for my grandfather. It is either Oberbieber or Heddesdorf. He pulled that off some paper work that he had, but not being able to read German we were not sure which one was correct.

Either way, it was in the same area in the Rhineland-Palatinate: Both Oberbieber and Heddesdorf are former independent communities that are now parts of the municipality of Neuwied. Heddesdorf was absorbed into Neuwied in 1904, Oberbieber in 1970.

This is an "old thread" but I think that this photo should be here for completeness.

How tall was von Alvensleben? Just curious as to whether he was a giant, or the rest of the officers on the photo were midgets.

I found a very unique frontline photo taken by the Germans in Poland in 1939 - it is said to be showing a unit of Selbschutz (Selbschutz was part of so called "V Column") acting in southern part of Greater Poland (former Provinz Posen when it was under Prussian occupation) - Polenfeldzug 1939:

The photo comes from the album "Army Poznań 1939" by Piotr Bauer and Bogusław Polak, KAW, Poznań, 1987:

WARNING!:

Someone posted MY SCAN of this photo on a Neo-Nazi website as "Polish militia hunting Volkdeutsche" (sic!):

It must have been posted recently because previously I didn't see it on that website!

When and where was this photograph taken? Is it free to use?
