SS & Polizei staff in Lyon, France

#1

Post by trafalgar » 02 Mar 2005, 11:40

Do any of you know what high ranking SS, Polizei, Abweher, etc. that operated in Lyon, France during world war 2? I know Klaus Barbie operated there from i believe 1942 to the end of the war. What I really need is names of SS officers and abweher.

-Cheers

Thanks for the names. One thing though. I looked the names up on Google and could not find any information on these people. Do you know of any sites? Pictures? Stories? Information? Anything. Also - and please dont think im an ignorant ass- but I didn't understand the first bit: Kdr Sipo and SD Lyon; which of the names were for Sipo and which were for SD? Sorry, I needed to clarify.

head of Amt IV B in Lyon was Erich Bartelmus.
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/delestraint/p4.htm

according to this link, before Bartelmus, another officer named Wenzl was in charge of the Amt IV B.

The name of another member of KdS Lyon is given here:
Weisz was assigned to recruit the former SS Colonel Gunther Bernau, who had been part of Klaus Barbie’s (1913-1991) Gestapo network in Lyon,
http://www.eaec.org/newsletters/2004/NL2004Jan.htm

Kdr SiPo und SD means the officer was the actual KdS there, aka Kommandeur der Sicherheitspolizei und des Sicherheitsdienstes (Commander of the Sipo and SD in a general commissariat; subordinate to the BdS). Its the same rank, in other words. Therefore Kdr SiPo und SD Lyon = KdS Lyon.

check this thread for any abbreviations you might not understand:

Dr Werner Knab

Knab previously with Stapo Munich and BdS Kiew (staff) before coming to Lyon as KdS.
He is believed to have been killed when US aircraft strafed the Berlin-Munich autobahn
on which he was travelling, March 1945. Notwithstanding this, he was sentenced to death
in absentia by a Military Tribunal in Lyon, 1954.

Hi Phil,

Would you happen to have the names of the Kdr Sipo & SD commanders in other major cities in France. Namely, Montpellier, Toulouse, Vichy, Nice, Limoges, Chalons sur Marne, Nancy, Dijon, Rennes, Poiters, Angers and St. Quentin.

Thanks,

Dou

Sipo in France

I have some alternative KdS identifications to those posted above:

KdS Bordeaux
Hans Luther not Erich Lutter

KdS Dijon
Wilhelm Hülf not Wilhelm Hult
August Meier, KdS before Hülf

KdS Limoges
August Meier not Anton Meier

KdS Nancy
Franz Hoth was "Kommissarisch Beauftragter" when appointed, Nov 1943

KdS Nice
I do not think Nice was a KdS office

KdS Poitiers
Hermann Herold not Richard Herold

KdS Rennes
Dr Hermann Heerdt not Gustav Herd

KdS Vichy
I believe it was the "gefallen" SS-Hstuf Hugo Geissler not Georg Geissler,
succeeded by Boemelburg

Steve

Walther Bierkamp

#15

Post by steve248 » 11 Mar 2005, 16:24

Incidentally, I am not convinced by your entry for Walter Bierkamp with BdS France.

There is a Heydrich order of 12 February 1941 (letterhead of RSHA I C (a) 1a) addressed to SS-Ostubaf ORuKR Walter Bierkamp "z.Zt. beim Befehlshaber der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD in Den Haag" cancelling his existing appointment as Kripoleiter Hamburg and appointing him Inspekteur, IdS Wehrkreis VI (Düsseldorf), with effect from 15 Feb 1941.
(DDR files at Berlin-Hoppegarten, ZR 523 Akte I p. 63).

Bierkamp was a suicide on 15 May 1945 at Scharbeutz (near his home); Mark Yerger in his "Allgemeine SS..." gives an incorrect explanation and date of death.
