Post by Matt Gibbs » 27 Mar 2002 23:35

I am looking for information and pictures of this officer. Anything relating to his career and also his life in the Hitlerjugend. Any information or leads would be useful! Medals, awards, units anything!
I do know he was awarded the Bandenkampfabzeichen in Gold - thats why I want to know more!

unlucky

Post by Matt Gibbs » 17 Apr 2002 13:12

Hmm, well, I must be unlucky. Nothing from the forum this time but I have found out this guy was a member of the 24th SS Karstjager. He was awarded the Bandenkampfabzeichen in GOLD by Himmler in January/February 1945 along with 3 other fellow officers. Any info on the members of this unit therefore would be appreciated!! Many thanks for the book recommendations already noted!!
Is there any forum members specialise in this type of warfare research, looking at the late war picture or anti partisan operations..???
Just wondering!
Regards

SS-Ostuf. Erich Kühbandner- career info.

Post by Michael Miller » 18 Apr 2002 04:56

Here's some information on Kuhbandner; source is John Moore's "Führerliste der Waffen-SS" CD-Rom.

Kühbandner, Erich
SS-Obersturmführer

Born: 21. Oct. 1921 in Rosenheim / Bayern
Died: 9. Oct. 1991

SS-Nr.: 421 069

Assignments:
7.SS-Freiw.Geb.Div. "Prinz Eugen": (Feb. 1945)
III.Bataillon / Waffen-Gebirgs-(Karstjäger)-Regiment 59 / Waffen-Gebirgs-(Karstjäger)Brigade der SS: (Nov. 1944) (per Kurt Mehner, "Die Waffen-SS und Polizei 1939-1945"- a book with quite a few errors- states he was SS-Hauptsturmführer and Kdr. of I./Waffen-Geb.-(Karstjäger)Regiment 59 from 5. Dec. 1944 to 10. Feb. 1945. But John Moore's CD-Rom "Führerliste der Waffen-SS", as well as the award document for Kuhbandner's Bandenkampfabz. in Gold describe him as SS-Ostuf. in command of III.Bataillon.

SS-Standartenoberjunker in 6.Kompanie / SS-Regiment (mot.) "Deutschland": (Oct. 1941)

A photo of the aforementioned award document, signed by Heinrich Himmler on 15. Feb. 1945, appears in John Angolia's "For Führer and Fatherland- Military Awards of the Third Reich" (R.J. Bender Publishing). It reads:

"Besitzzeugnis dem
SS-Obersturmführer K U H B A N D N E R , Erich
III./Waffen-Geb.(Karst)Jg.Rgt.-SS Nr. 1
Adriatisches Küstenland

Verleihe ich
für Tapfere Teilnahme an 100 Kampftagen

das

Bandenkampfabzeichen in Gold

Feld-Kommandostelle den 15. Februar 1945

Der Reichsführer-SS

(signed) H. Himmler"

Best wishes,

Greatful thanks for your reply Mike!!
Just the infomrmation I was looking for. I wasn;t sure whether he would have passed away or still living because although young I didn't know his age in the war. Also I didn't know his award documentation etc had survived. I assume the guerilla warfare badge award is in private hands somewhere..? I will have to look up the picture in that book I guess! I shall keep on my searching.
Thanks once again!

Stammführer,

here's some info:

24. SS-Karstjäger Division unit commanders:

Staf. Dr. Hans Brand (Summer 42-June? 44)
Stubaf. Josef Berschneider (June-July 44)
Stubaf. Werner Hahn (July-August? 44)
Ostubaf. Carl Marx (late summer 44-late 44)
Ostubaf. Wagner (late 44-April 45)
Brigf. Heinz Harmel (April 45-May 45)

First commander of then SS-Karstwehr-Kompanie SS-Standartenführer Dr. Hans Brand (1879-1959, SS no. 340 782) was cave researcher and professor. I don't have much on him except that he also worked on research in Pottenstein cave in the French Karst. There he set up Flossenbürg satellite camp where more than 700 prisoners from KZ worked.

Also chech this two sites:

http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quart ... nstvo.html

I'm also interested in anti-partisan operations :D

Many thanks for the replies and help. I have found out some more info and am now waiting to order a couple of recommended books for more information.
I was wondering about te award document to this officer which is pictures in Angolia's book. Does anyone have any idea where it is now or whose colection it might be in..? If so I would welcome the chance to find out and correspond with this person. Any information gratefully recieved, and if the collector concerned ina visitor to the forum and they would like to email me I would be very happy! :)
I wonder if the badge concered also survives in a collection..? Any ideas..?
With regard to the date of Erich Kuhbandner's death I have a question, is there more known. I'd like to find out whether there was a printed obituary with the details and whether I might be able to find out where to obtain a copy for my research. I was assuming that his award document and effects must have been sold off at sometime and wanted to find out details etc.
Regards

Image

Dr. Tone Ferenc ID him as Helmut Prasch, CO of SD and Schutz-Pol. in Pulj. But I think he made a mistake. :?

See for yourself in "Ilustrirana zgodovina gestapa", str. 241.

Interesting

Post by Matt Gibbs » 09 Sep 2003 23:53

I have not access tot he publication you mention I am afraid, however, I have seen this picture in two other books cited as being Erich Kühbandner, taken after the Himmler presentation and published in the Völkischer Beobachter. However, this muct be wrong because I have a copy of the VB with the presentation details and the photo does not appear with the article, unless it was published later. I have heard that the presentation was also covered in Das 12-Uhr-Blatt of the same date but have no access to this publication to verify, so the pic could come from there. Interestingly in my other thread of officers for identification another pic was picted out by a member as being Kühbandner, and I am not sure of this. However, it could be that the names are or have been confused between the 2 pictures at some time..? Prasch was the 'other' Ostuf at the Himmler presentation. Ah, how nice it is to get confused...
Of cours,e the pic of the dark haired officer i allude to shows the DK and I don;t know that Kühbandner recieved this. No one else seems to know either because I posted the question and no one has responded...

Trouble is, the jpg files are very large and exceed the size limit.
I suggest resizing them.
If you need help with that, you can send them to me at [email protected] and I'll help you.
