Could anybody tell me when the former Latvian general and Red Army general Voldemars Skaistlauks joined the Waffen-SS and which appointments he held in the 15th SS Grenadier Division.

Kind Regards

He is listed a Kdr.Art.Rgmt.15 in 11.44 in John Moore's listings.
He is not listed in the Axis Biographical Research website under Latvian volunteers but interestingly Arturs Michael Silgailis is. He was 2nd in command of 15th Waffen-Grenadier Division from March 43 to July 44.

Thanks for the information. I would still like to know when he joined the Waffen SS, and whether he had other appointments.

The following can be confirmed from the Waffen-SS personnel records of Voldemars Skaistlauks, who was born on 6 September 1892 in the district of Kalnciems near Mitau in Latvia:

Skaistlauks received an appointment as a Waffen-Standartenführer in the W-SS on 4.4.1943 and on 7.4.1943 was appointed commander of the Artillerieregiment 15 and later promoted to W-Oberfüher on 9.11.1944 in the same assignment. He held the EK I and EK II.

Earlier he had served as a Leutnant in the 43.Artilleriebrigade of the Czar´s Army from 20.9.1912 until 19.7.1915. He served as an artillery officer in the Latvian Army from 26.2.1919 until his discharge on 22.1.1941. He was promoted to General on 2.8.1940 as commander of the Kurzemes Division.

John,
Thanks for the info. I was aware of his record in the imperial Russian army and Latvian army (see my website). Only his Waffen-SS career are unknown to me. Thanks anyway.

He was transferred to the Red Army in August 1941 as GOC Art XXIV Rifle Corps. I didn´t have his date of retirement, Thanks!
