Himmler certainly rated him as he took more than 6 months to appoint a successor (Kaltenbrunner) at a crucial time when "Aktion Reinhardt" and the expansion of Birkenau was about to begin.

Kaltenbrunner never had the same sweeping powers at the RSHA that Heydrich did. For example, Heinrich Muller (Gestapo) more often than not bypassed his immediate superior and reported directly to Himmler.

I think Heydrich had the talent of being able to micro-manage every aspect of the RSHA successfully, whilst still finding the time to fly combat missions with the Luftwaffe or govern in Prague.

It's little wonder that Goering regarded him as a serious threat as early as 1938 or 1939 should there ever be a leadership vacuum in the Third Reich.
