German Police Battalions and Regiments - List

#1

Post by stcamp » 10 Feb 2006, 18:32

Hello,

I thought this a better place to post this than any of the other areas such as SS and Polizei. The German Police were the primary instrument of murder in the 1939 - 1942 period. They were responsible for the cold blooded murder of over a million people.

I have had problems in doing research in this area finding you need to go through six books to find out the answer to one question. I wanted a list that told me the following about a Police Battalion:

1. Where did the members originate?
2. Where was it formed?
3. Where was it located during it's existence?
4. What actions did it participate in?
5. What Regiment did it end up belonging to?
6. NARA or other references when possible.

I hope others may find this list of use. My sources are also attached.

Regards,
Steve

The pilot project for offensive “anti-partisan fighting” was the operation “Bamberg” in the area of Glusk-Paritschi-Oktjabrski to the south of Bobruisk, in the eastern Polesje. The operation had already been prepared since 26 February 1942 from the southerly General Commissariat Shitomir by actions of the Slovakian infantry regiment with the subordinated German police battalion 325 in the area Mosyr-Shitkovichi, which probably claimed more than 1,000 lives.

Thanks for that list stcamp, it's certainly a very good start. I'm curious why there does not appear be any indication on the list if a battalion was a reserve formation or not, see for example the 101st.

Possible things to include are also for example the Estonian police battalions.

Well, As far as the reserve status I guess because it did not occur to me. :)

I want to add more places. Also there is some good info on Ukranian units now.
I am sure I missed a lot and made a few errors but thanks.

Steve

Steve -

Please don't take this as criticism as my intention is simply to make a constructive suggestion. Just as it is ill-advised to write a basic or intermediate level history of a German Heer regiment or battalion without reference to Georg Tessin's splendid 16+ volume work that was published in the 1960's and 1970's by Biblio Verlag, it is also ill-advise to try and tackle the German police and auxiliary police formations and units without used the following:

Neufeldt, H.-J., J. Huck and Georg Tessin. Zur Geschichte der Ordnungspolizei: Die Stäbe und Truppeneinheiten der Ordnungspolizei, 1936-1945. Koblenz: Bundesarchiv, 1957.

It is the bible, the basic reference document. It will tell you exactly when and where each and every unit was formed, its correct name or designation, its composition plus some details on it activity. The information is all taken from the Anordnungsblätter der Deutschen Polizei, the Erlaße der RFSS und Chef der Deutschen Polizei and other primary archiv documents. Georg Tessin was an archivist with the Bundesarchiv for 30+ years after the war and that is what makes his works so vital and foundational to the study of German units. As Karl Malden used to say, "Don't leave home without it."

If you have any doubts about this advice, you can go over to the SS and Police biographical thread here on AHF and ask people like Phil Nix who work with the SS und Polizei documents.

Thank you all for your kind remarks. Larry thanks. I have been looking for:

Neufeldt, H.-J., J. Huck and Georg Tessin. Zur Geschichte der Ordnungspolizei: Die Stäbe und Truppeneinheiten der Ordnungspolizei, 1936-1945. Koblenz: Bundesarchiv, 1957.

The Library of Congress is the closest place me. When I get some time I am going over and copy it. I was surprised the Holocaust Museum did not have a copy.

Steve

Steve -

If you limit your list to just the German police battalions, then you can use the information in the lexikon-der-wehrmacht link provided by Jan-Hendrik. The information in the link concerning the individual battalions was taken directly from the Neufeldt, Huck and Tessin work, which I have next to me. They are the same. However, you will need the Tessin work for additional information on the Polizei-Regimenter and the non-German auxiliary police units such as the Schutzmannschaften und Hilfspolizei.

Good luck!
