SS-Standartenjunker Will Fey, RKT (?) - Questions

#1

Post by Michael Miller » 31 Mar 2006, 21:50

A lot of doubt has been cast on this soldier's wartime record, and I'd be interested to see the facts finally separated from the alleged rubbish. I do not have/cannot afford Veit Scherzer's new book on the Ritterkreuzträger, but would like to know his assessment of Fey's entitlement or lack thereof to wear the award.

With thanks in advance,
~ Mike

My belated gift for my comrade-in-arms Mike

FEY:
Without having any documentary evidence in the Bundesarchiv there is however the off chance of an official proposal to Burgdorf as well a bestowal directly by Hitler.
Acces to the records of the bestowing-commission of the OdR was unfortunately refused for Veit Scherzer by evidence to law of the Bundesarchiv.

Fellgiebel himself gave an account of the procedure in a letter from 1976:
Fey proposed for himself a court of honour shortly after he joined the Bundeswehr. Chairman was assumedly oakleaves-winner Werner Ebeling (at last Generalmajor/Bundeswehr).
This honorary council acknowledged the KC without the official verification.
The OdR accepted this decision "we don' t want to be wiser than the Bundeswehr".

Another filthy fiddling of the "honourable" companionship of the OdR.
Fey was a member and official of the OdR. He weard often and fain the neck order.

In "Panzerkamf im Bild" Fey claims that he was commander of a Panzerjagdkommando in Berlin at the end of the war. A quote from the book:

However, I have nowhere else found any mentionings of Fey being in Berlin. Neither have I found no mentionings of Weber being wounded on that day. None of the surviving veterans of Weber's "Nahkampfschule" seem to recall Fey taking over Weber's place.

It is quite interesting to note that the day Fey claimed to receive the Knight's cross is the same day he releived Weber. Weber received the Knight's cross on that day.

Has Fey's transfer from s.Pz.Abt. 102 been confirmed? From what I've read he was transferred to a school in Königsbrück after the Normandy campaign, he was there to the end of january but then what?

Best regards/ Daniel

But there is a big difference !! Wilhelm Weber has been awarded indeed on 29.04.1945, also reported and acknowledged by Veit Scherzer.

Exactly my point, Dieter. Did Fey claim to have received the Knight's cross by Mohnke? Did Mohnke refute that after the war?

Daniel,

Mohnke presented the KC on 29. April in the Bunker at the presence of General Hans Krebs to Wilhelm Weber, Friedrich Herzig, Karl Körner and Oskar Schäfer (according to Veit Scherzer). Possibly also to Apollot (Mohnke could'n t remember years after the war his name).
Nothing about Fey.

Thanks, Dieter. That is what I suspected. Did Mohnke confirm that Fenet received the Knight's cross?

I heard a story years ago from someone who Knew Fey that Fey and Paul Egger were busy throwing incriminating accusations at each other, each claiming that the other was not a real RKT, while he himself was. Perhaps neither was the genuine article.

Mohnke in a letter 1974:
He confirmed the bestowal with the KC to Wilhelm Weber, and - by request of Division "Charlemagne" also - to Vaulot, Fenet and possibly Apollot (the name escaped him).
Mohnke demanded officially the KCs for bestowing from General Burgdorf, and after receiving them there he himself handed over the awards in the bunker.

Mohnke in another letter from 1974:
Weber was the only KC-winner of the "Charlemagne"-Division who received his award by Mohnke.
Vaulot received his award (according to Krätschmer) from his Divisions-Kommandeur Dr. Krukenberg.

BTW: Paul Egger has absolutely nothing as proof for his KC in the german archives. He was cancelled by Veit Scherzer.

I concur, excellent information that comes very close to ruling out Fey and several others as bona fide RKT's. Unfortunate, but nonetheless- very well done, gentlemen.

Here's a picture of Fey where he's wearing a side cap with silver cord , that's an indication that he was at least a Standartenoberjunker , only from this rank on you were allowed to wear the piping on your cap.
