Danish SS Numbers

Post by Phil Nix » 28 Oct 2002 13:55

I have the personal file on Christian-Peter Kryssing and no ss number is given. SS Personalveranderungsblatt Nr 5a dated 9.11.1944 and Nr 1a dated 30th january 1945 Give promtions for Waffen Führer and in no case is an SS number given. Numbers are given for all Germans in these promtion lists

Did all non-germans recieve ss-numbers? I know at least three danes did: Obersturmbannführer Bruno Boysen (don't know for sure if he was a dane) ss-nr. 21.358; Obersturmführer Erik Brørup ss-nr. 431.081 and Obersturmführer Søren Kam ss-nr. 456.059.

SS Numbers

Post by Phil Nix » 29 Oct 2002 11:14

Hi Dawm
On checking I think that numbers were not given to none German members of the Waffen SS. However a numbering system was set up for those persons who were considered "Germanic" i.e. Danes, Norwegians, Dutch. Evidence:-
SS Personalveranderungsblatt for 30.1.45 and 9.11.44 shows a seperate section for Waffenführer and none have numbers
SS Verordnungsblatt for 9.11.43 shows Karl Marthinsen promoted to HSF with the number SSNr5 (Norwegen). Egil Olbjörn prom HSF with the number SS Nr 3 (Norwegen)
SS Personalveranderungsblatt for 30.1.44 lists Jan Hendrik Slot as Usf SSNr 31 (Ndl) Piet Jan Schmid Usf SS Nr 59 (Ndl) and Marcussenn Ludovicus Geradus Wybrands USFG SS Nr 1705 (Ndl)
In SS Personalveranderungsblatt for 9.11.44 there is an OSF Alois von Sarközy (Hungarian) with a full SS Nr 464412 and I think he is Volksdeutsche and therefore would be eligable for entry into the Allgemeine SS
Hope this helps

SS-numbers

Post by dawm » 29 Oct 2002 14:29

I think you're right (foreign volunteers very generally not given ss-numbers), but I know that Søren Kam wasn't Volksdeutsche and he recieved a ss-number (456.059). He was born in Copenhagen in Denmark, but won the Knights Cross on the 7th. of February 1945 and maybe that's why he recieved his SS-numbers. But then again - maybe he was of German origin.

SS Numbers

Post by Phil Nix » 30 Oct 2002 12:02

Hi Dawm
Two Norwegen Government ministers in the SS had SS Number
Jonas Lie SS Of Nr 401276 Police Minister
Sverre Riisnaes SS SF Nr 435119 Justice Minister
So it seems completely arbitary whether Numbers were given to germanic members

Interesting indeed!

Thanks for some interesting info Dawm and Philmil!

To my knowlegde Søren Kam was a native dane with no relations to Germany. (Høgh-Sørensen, "Dansk dødspatrulje - En bog om SS-officer Søren Kam"), and as far as Knightcrosses is concerned I doubt that this has any part in it. Maybe J. Hellmers and E. Christophersen also were given SS numbers? Well, I'll see through my archives to see if I can find out anything. I would also be interested in seeing the picture of Hellmers. Thank you Dawm.
BTW, Philmil, could you please help me out, in regards to getting these Stammrollen (Kryssing etc.). Where do I find them? (Would be possible to buy a copy of the Kryssing file, from you?)

Regards
Chris

Hi Bernd Rosemeyer

Sorry about the late reply

Here is the pic of Johannes Hellmers. I found it on a website (I don't remember where - shame on me).

Hi Dawm

This is the same photo used in Schneiders, Verleihung Genemigt!, on Knights Cross holders in the Waffen-SS and Police. I seem to recall more pictures of Hellmers in Patrick Atge´s book on the foreign volunteers also. I don't remember the exact title, but it has a good article on this individual.

The subject of SS-numbers to Danish officers is rather complicated.
Kryssing who was an SS-Brigadeführer wasn't given an SS-number but he was listed as active SS-Führer in the DAL. Also the Danish officer Orla Holger Arentoft was listed as a reserve SS-Führer with an SS-Number in the DAL. Ernst Viffert (Waffen-Obersturmbannführer) was listed in the SS-Personalverordnungsblatt but without an SS-Number.
Danes like Søren Kam who attended the complete SS-Führerlehrgang at Bad Tölz were accepted as full SS-members and consequently given an SS-Number.
Very confusing and not very transparent.
