That would've been Bosnian Muslims. The Bosnian units in the Austro-Hungarian Army also wore the fez.

Yes, Croatian (Bosnian) Muslim units (of both the Croatian and German armed forces) wore fezzes.
And the above-pictured persons do have Muslim names: Salko (father) and Šemnun (son) Vidinlija. The photo caption reads: "Uspomena od Salka i njegovog sina Šemnuna. Rođen 3/9 1942 g., a slikan 3/12 1942. Šemnun Vidinlija, sin Vidinlije Salka." Translation: "A keepsake from Salko and his son Šemnun. Born 3 September 1942, photographed 3 December 1942. Šemnun Vidinlija, son of Salko Vidinlija." (Note: a "Vidinlija" is someone or something originating from Vidin, a town and region in present-day Bulgaria, which used to be occupied by the Ottomans for centuries.)
Cheers,
Ivan
PS
Here's another photo of Ustashas with fezzes (on the left), in Bosanska Krajina, from Redžić's book "Muslimansko autonomaštvo i 13. SS divizija" (pictured on the right: Dr Džafer Kulenović, vice president of the NDH government). The Poglavnik himself wearing an Ustasha fez, honouring the Muslims (from Matković's book "Povijest Nezavisne Države Hrvatske", p. 134).

Re: Croatian NDH Ustaška vojnica formations who was wearing fez?
Let me also touch on the subject and add that the Fez was worn by virtually all ethnicities of the pre-war Bosnia and Herzegovina, best example being in the Bosnian Regiments of the Austro-Hungarian Army (the Regiments were composed of nearly 40% Orthodox and 23% Catholic men). Small variations in the civilian life were made with Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks) opted for the red Fez, whereas the Bosnian Orthodox (Serbs) opted for a darker variant.
Once the NDH rule was established over Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Fez was specifically banned by law for Serbs and Jews. Hope this gave a small backstory to your question.
Cheers,
Filip

Here is what I was referring to, from a Sarajevo (NDH Controlled) newspaper.
"Jews and Serbs not allowed to fear Fezzes"
"Jews and Serbs not allowed to fear Fezzes"

Thanks for the scan, Filip. What is the newspaper title/date please? (Notice that they wrote "Jews" without a capital letter.)

Hello, Ivan
The newspapers are called "Novi List". I need to re-check the date, but the year is 1941.

Filip

Yes, they started marking the Jewish population in May 1941, but what's the day the newspapers text was issued?

Re: Croatian NDH Ustaška vojnica formations who was wearing fez?
I'm familiar with photo background text, but Im looking for any INFO about Ustaška Vojnica military formation who was wearing fez with U insignia.
IMO solider from photo has full collar tab insignia, so there is possibility he serve on military formations located near larger garrisons. (A lot of Ustaška Vojnica soliders who served smaller and distant military units has only a U insignia, without background.)
I found some information that Dr. Džafer Kulenović has some type of honor guard compoused from members who was wearing fez with U insignia.
Does anyone something more?

Hello, Schlange
In future, when fellow members spend their valuable time to respond to your post in a friendly manner, it's polite to reply at least with a thanks. Second, the text was transcribed and translated to you entirely since you were looking for info on the pictured person but didn't read his surname properly, as you wrote on three other internet forums: it's not "Salko Vidinlije", it's Vidinlija, which means originating from Vidin. Now you can at least search for a correct name.

@Ivan Im looking for his Ustaška Vojnica unit, not his family origin - please read my posts.
Re: Croatian NDH Ustaška vojnica formations who was wearing fez?
Perhaps you should read them too.
Ivan
To find info on him, you need his name. Now you got the correct name, plus its origin. So you're welcome, and good luck in your search.Schlange88 wrote: ↑09 Jan 2020, 10:22Is there any info about Croatian Ustaška Vojnica military formations who wearing fez with Ustaška Vojnica insignia?
