Cavalry Actions of the Axis
Hi Napoli
Just thought you'd like these pics, that I've taken from 'Cavalry of the Wehrmacht 1941-1945', by Klaus Christian Richter.
Regards
Bob

During the War with Poland the Germans deployed the 1st Cavalry Brigade. On 23 September 1939 German Cavalry clashed with the Polish 25th Uhlans in classic style with sabres and lances. The Poles where successful in the begining but when they dashed on, German machine guns opened up and the Poles where cut to pieces.

By the use of lance, would such an item be around 7ft long as I was suprised to once see a WW1 movie with German cavalry charging a line using such an item with what appeared to be white linen cloth wrapped over their faces and head. I can only imagine that the cloth might have been used for possibly the protection of face from constant brushes with tree's, or maybe some other reason that someone else could explain?

Hi Napoli and all of you...pretty interesting, particularly the stories about hungarians hussars.....now you will like to know that in this famous charge of the Savoia Cavalleria, col.Bettoni was leading the charge with an ethiopian scimitar he captured years ago during the Abyssinian campaign.
About the last cavalry charge of the war at large scale,it happened in the very last month of the war when the SS cossacks of Von Pannwitz (XV SS Kosaken Korps) charged with sabers the vanguards of the soviet army,in Yugoslavia.
I would like to ask the rumanians comrades if they have some infos about the two rumanians SS regiments, where they fought, and if somebody may scann one or two pictures of rumanians SS.Thanks a lot .

At the beginning of 1945, two regiments (each with two battalions) were ready for action. Horia Sima managed to convince the Germans not to use them against Romanian troops. The 3,000 men of the Waffen SS Grenadier Regiment Rumänische Nr. 1 saw action in Pomerania, north of Stettin, where they were almost completely wiped out. The second regiment was transformed into an AT regiment: Waffen SS Panzer-Zerstörer Regiment Rumänische Nr. 2. Despite the name, it was equipped with … bicycles. They were all taken prisoners by the Western Allies in May 1945. A third regiment began training, but because the end was near, they were used mainly as work teams.
