Gen Domaniczky 1889-1945, was CO of corps 3 & Div 20, and Military Attache to Romania. Gen Gyorffy-Bengyel 1886+1942, was Asst Honved Minister 1940-1941, and died in 1942. Gen Nagy, 1887-1945 was CO of Corps 7 & Div 30, and Minister of Defense in 1945. Is it a coincidence that 2 of them died in 1945, or were they executed at the end of the war ? I don't know. I hope this helps you. Harry

Baron,

again: according to my knowledge, only two Hungarian Generals were killed in action (while they were in active duty).

One was István Makay, the other was Major General Béla Tanitó, who was killed by an air raid in Szombathely on 4 March, 1945 (he was born on 29 August, 1891).

According to my knowledge, another General killed by an air raid, but he was retired, not active.
Few other Generals perished in Soviet captivity in 1945, but dying as a POW is a different situation (altough in Hungary, this cathegory was counted as a heroic death cathegory - the German Heldentod, in Hungarian hősi halott - like the ones, who killed in action)

would col. gen.jozsef Heszlenyi qualify ? His suicide was may 15, 1945 but technically his war wasnt over and he killed himself to avoid capture.
Laszlo Vitez Deak was a suicide 1945 he was made a major general in the W-SS in Nov. 44.

Hi,

This comes from Péter Ákos Kosaras "Magyarok a Waffen-SS kötelékében" /Hungarians in the Waffen-SS/, pages 27-28.

"During the summer of 1944 some 800-1000 men expressed their wish to join the SS at the HQ of V Corps of the Honvédség in Szeged. Their request was forwarded to the MoD who contacted Georg Keppler SS-Gruppenführer und Generalleutnant der Waffen-SS. The SS-Hauptamt grabbed at the opportunity and on 20AUG44 signed a contract with the Hungarian MoD to form a new SS unit. Col (ret.) László Deák was assigned CO as SS-Oberführer. Volunteers were formed into 3 Coys plus HQ. Command language was to be Hungarian.

The next day IX SS-Gebirgskorps in Belgrade accepted the recruits and equipped them. On 25AUG44 the KG moved to Újvidék/Novi Sad where basic training of the green 3Coy and training of the other Coys for German weapons started. On 10SEP44 they moved to Titel and by 21SEP44 they were combat ready apart from the green 3Coy.

From then on KGD was subordinated to various HQs and fought in the Bácska-Bánát area. During the withdrawal they acted as rearguard. They suffered 30 percent casualties and were withdrawn from frontline duty on 28OCT44. They were sent to Kaposvár and later to Zalaszentgrót on 3NOV44 where they were officially disbanded on 11NOV44 and the personnel transferred to Waffen-Grenadier-Regiment der SS 61 (ung. Nr. 1).

László Deák became CO of 61Reg and later became Chief of Staff of XVII Waffen-Armeekorps der SS (ungarisches). His fate is unclear. Some report that he was murdered by US soldiers just before the capitulation, others report that he committed suicide on 3MAY45 in Burghausen."

Bye,
Krisz

Best Regards

Lieutenant-Field Marshal Ödön Domaniczky retired on the 1st November 1942 and died on the 4th May 1945.

Lieutenant-Field Marshal Sándor Györffy-Bengyel died on the 14th June 1942 while in office as Közellátásügyi tárcanélküli miniszter (I have been unable to translate this).

Lieutenant-Field Marshal Gyula Nagy retired on the 1st August 1942 and died on the 4th March 1945.

I have no indications that these deaths were anything else than deaths by natural causes.

Kind Regards

Gyorfy-Bengyel was Deputy Honved Minister 12-1-40 to 9-15-41 He was also Chief of the Military bureau 40-41 ( Hungarian equivalent of OKH ) 1939 -40 he was chief of the supply Bureau. He was part of the Bolshevik army in the early 20's but i dont see him in any field commands - supply and command only.

A kormány szervezete 1848 óta több változózáson ment keresztül.

Gyula Nagy 3-1-40 to 5-1-42 co VII Corps 2nd Army. from 2-23-39 to 3-1-40 he led the 13th Infantry division.
MG Karoly Nagy led 1st Mixed brigade 5-1-24 to 6-1-27
Gen. Pal Nagy was Commander in Chief of the army feb. 1921 till 10-28-25
Geza Nagy was military attache to Romania 11-20-32 to 5-1-35 ( took over from Domaniczky ) and commander 20th Infantry Division, III Corps, 2nd Army 8-10-42 to 10-3-42 at which point he seems to disappear .. Possibly casualty ? ) he was only a col though. But as divisional Co he qualifies. Notice the similarities to his career and that of Domaniczky even to the point he served under Domaniczky in III Corps.
