Szombathély/Köszeg war during early 1944 until end 1945

Post by Géza Árbocz » 11 Feb 2003, 00:41

I'm hungarian born at Szombathely at Jan21.1944, being my father Miklos Árbocz an officer from the Hungarian Royal Army, serving at the Köszeg Alreal Katona Iskola.
What I want to know:
1. Was Szombathely bombed by the Russian Air Force at the day I've borned?
2. Where I can get more information about the Köszeg Alreal Katona Iskola.
3. What were the movies of this part of the war front, as according to my mother, my father needed to evacuated to Germany with part of the Army during mead 1944, and we left at may 1945, my mother with 5 kids, being my oldest brother 12 years old, and myself with 16 months old.
Thanks for any help.

Hi,

just started my search about the topic. I've found two bits of information to the moment:

1. Szombathely was captured by Soviet troops on the 29th of March, 1945.

2. The military school in Kőszeg was formed Sept. 1922 as "Hunyadi Mátyás" m. kir. reáliskolai nevelőintézet, t.i. Mathias Hunyadi hungarian royal alreal boarding school. Have a look at this site, very informative:

http://www.honved-gyor.sulinet.hu/csondor.htm

+ I have one guess. You were born in January '44, and the front was still very far away from W-Hungary. I don't think Szombathely, not being a primary industrial nor military target was bombed until quite later.

Best,

Abel

Dear Abel,
Many thanks for your prompt reply, I've looked at the site you recomended, it is very helpfull.
With respect of the bombing of Szombathely, my mother used to speak about this event, that she holded me on her arms during the bombing, as she refused to go to the shelter, and that I was not afraid, just wathched with open eyes. She even told me that the "Stalin candles" were very beautiful as they iluminated a large part of the area, during the night events.

Dear Geza,

I've got another fine site for you about the school;

http://www.mek.iif.hu/porta/szint/tarsa ... fond09.htm

Here you'll find a brief info on the Koszeg school and other Hungarian military objects as well.

As for the bombing of Szombathely, if you were born in 1944 and you mention Stalin Candles - at that time Kathushas were still fighting at the Crimea area of Ukraine against von Manstein. Probably the event could have occured on your first birthday. Is this possible?
Best,

Abel

Hi Géza,

On 21 January, 1944 the VVS didn't attacked Szombathely. Perhaps Ábel Ravasz has right - this event was in your first birthday...
The VVS attacked Budapest twice in september, 1942, but till the winter 1944/45 they didn't attacked the western Hungarian cities.

Dear Abel and Csaba,

It can be that the event was on my first aniversary, but at that time it needed to be at Köszeg, where we lived at the Alreal Iskola.
Thanks for the answers which are very helpful to me.

If you are Hungarian origin you are not Geza Arbocz, but Arbocz Geza.
(I am sorry I have not Hungarian fonts to write your name correctly).

Best regards.

Best,

Almost: MUSASZI in Polish (without H).
I mean in Hungarian gramatically lastname is first and it would be nice to keep up the tradition writing that way on forum.
Best regards :D

Szálasi and his cabinet left Kõszeg in 27. March 1945.
Szálasi himself left Hungary only 29. March 1945.
214 person left Kõszeg with Prime Minister Szálasi.
The Red Army occupied Kõszeg without fighting in 29. March 1945.
Béla Király captain of the general staff, met with Red Army front of the city, and safeguard the civilian from the siege, he gave the city up to the Red Army.
