Does anyone know whether former Deputy Honvéd Minister Lieutenant-Field Marshal Field Miksa Nagyszombathy served in any capacity during WWII? Or was he retired in 1939?
Kind Regards

AJK,
As always! Thank you very much. I assume that he was retired then.

Hi AJK,
Once again thank you. I’ve a small question which puzzle me. It seem reasonably that he was retired when he ended his tour as Inspector of Infantry on 1st November 1937, however I’ve always understood that the Deputy Honvéd Minister was a serving general, and Niehorster has him as Deputy Minister from November 1939 until sometime 1939.
Have I misunderstood the position of the Deputy minister – didn’t necessarily have to be an active general?
Kind Regards

Hi Steen,
You are correct that the Deputy Honvéd Minister was a senior serving General. I don’t know where Dr. Niehorster got his information about General Nagyszombathy, but his name does not appear in the 1938 or 1940 rank lists which I have in my archives (unfortunately not the 1939 list). Moreover, Dr. Sándor Szakály, in his excellent book “A magyar katonai felsö vezetés 1938 – 1945”, which provides biographies of all the senior Hungarian Generals of the 1938 - 1945 period, does not include Nagyszombathy, which would not make sense if he indeed had served as Deputy Honvéd Minister, albeit for a short duration in 1939.
Best wishes,
AJK
