Diplomatic recognition of Slovakia

I'm wondering if anyone has info on which countries recognized Slovakia's independence in the 1939-1945 era, and when they did so.

Hi,

26 countries did so according to this:
http://toriblog.blog.hu/2009/01/07/az_e ... sag_4_resz

The first countries were Germany and Hungary. Then the Baltic states and Finland, Sweden, Spain, Vatican, the Netherlands, Belgium, Rumania, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. There were also the Soviet Union, Japan, Italy, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Manchukuo, Nanking China, Croatia and Vichy France. That is 23 by name.

Britain and France had consular offices, while the USA denied recognition.

Bye,
Krisz

Slovakia enjoyed friendly relations with Free India although strangely it did not recognize the Free India government established in 1943 although Croatia did so.

Hello

are you really sure that France and especially the Regime of Pétain recognized Slovakia?
I had serious doubts because even the Petain's government didn't recognize Croatia

for the 1939-1940 period like in 1917-1918 France rebuilt a Czechoslovakian Army in 1939-1940, how this could be possible with a Slovakian recognition by the French Republic, ipso facto this means that the recognition was considered for sure caduque, null and void, because the Slovakian were sent to the Czechoslovakian authorities and units in France

Slovakia was only recognized de facto by the French Republic (like Great Britain) and grudgingly the 14th july 1939 but not really officially ("de jure") and diplomatic relations were broken off one month and two weeks later the 1st september 1939.
Pavol Petruf (see the pdf) writes too that the de facto recognition of Great Britain and France (after british pressures) were diferents : there were French and British consulates in Bratislava but only a Slovakian consulate in Great Britain, not in France who appears very reluctant to recognize Slovakia

post-june 1940 to 1944 I didn't find any Slovakian Embassy or Consulate in Vichy and even...just the opposite : a "Legation of Czechoslovakia" in Vichy and the Czechoslovakian consulate of Marseille in the southern free Zone were the last Czechoslovakian diplomatic offices of the whole occupied Europe

according to Pavol Petruf Les relations slovaco-françaises entre 1939 et 1944
http://www.cefres.cz/IMG/pdf/petruf_199 ... caises.pdf
the date of "25th april 1942" is often given as the official recognition but Pétain's new regime didn't recognize Slovakia
we don't know with certainty even today if Vichy has really recognized de jure Slovakia the 25th april 1942 (...) documents from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provide evidence of the intention to do it, but none of its realization and the Slovakian archives don't clarify this point
French interests in Slovakia were placed in the hands of the Spanish Embassy in Bratislava

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
according to Pavol Petruf, 30 States recognized Slovakia
from him and others sources:

1- Hungary 15th March
2- Poland 16th
3- Germany 17th
4- Vatican 25th

5- Italy 11th April
6- Estonia 11th
7- Latvia 13rd
8- Netherlands 15th
9- Switzerland 19th
10- Spain 25th

11- Great Britain 4th May (de facto)
12- Liberia 12nd
13- Ecuador 17th
14- Costa Rica 24th

15- Japan 1st June
16- Manchuria 1st
17- Yugoslavia 8th

18- France 14th July (de facto, and ending the following 1st september)
19- Belgium 14th
20- Finland 25th
21- Sweden 26th

22- Rumania 18th August

23- Soviet Union 16th September

24- Lituania 11th November
25- Bulgaria 16th

not found dates for the others given by CB1 (Nationalist China Croatia) or identified the 28 29 & 30

Loïc
