I have been doing some research on this gentleman. His career in WW2 is quite clear and his been discussed on this (the AH) Forum. However, researching his WW1 career as well as between the wars has been problematic. I was wondering if anyone could suggest any sources or reference?

Thanks!

Hi,

I am not sure if we talk about the same person, but according to this document:
http://csendor.com/konyvtar/konyvek/Nev ... yv1887.pdf
/1887 Almanach of Royal Hungarian Ministry of Defense, Army and Gendarmery/
and this:
http://csendor.com/konyvtar/konyvek/Zse ... 70-167.pdf
/1886 Almanach of Royal Hungarian Ministry of Defense, Army and Gendarmery/

- J.K. was commissioned as Lt. of he Gendarmery as of 1MAY1885
- J.K. was in command of 1st Platoon of the 5th Wing of 2nd Gendarmery District. His unit was based in Lugos.

Both document is searchable, there are the above two occurences of "Kisfaludy" in each.

If we consider however that this Kisfaludy was in his twenties in 1885, he must have been in his eighties in WW2.

Bye,
Krisz

PS: Sorry, different men:

Thanks for your reply but indeed not the same person. The Jozsef Kisfaludy I am speaking of was born in 1891 and died in 1967. That would put him 23 - 27 during WW1. I have some indication that he acheived the rank of Captain by end of WW1 but need to verify this.

Hi Scott,

Welcome to the Forum! Before the break-up of the A-H Empire, Kisfaludy's surname was Gröller. According to this site, a Gröller József served as an Oberleutnant (Föhadnagy) in the 18th Honved Infantry Regiment.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

VJK - Thank you very much for your welcome and information link!

I am curious about why Kisfaludy's name changed from Groller? You suggest this had to do with the break up of the A-H empire. Did such name changes routinely occur for this reason? Wondering how common a name Groller was and if this can only be the same person (ie Kisfaludy)?

Regarding the 18th Honved Infantry Regiment - what would collar/rank insignia look like?

Best,

Scott

Hi Scott,

After the break-up of the A-H Empire, it was a very common practice for the Hungarian officers to change their original Austrian surnames to something more Hungarian. To name just 2 of the most well known Hungarian Colonel-Generals - Gusztáv Jány's surname was originally Hautzinger, and Ferenc Szombathelyi was originally Knausz.

Unfortunately I don't know the answer to your other 2 questions.

Best regards,

VJK

VJK - thank you. It sounds as if you are pretty certain that the name/history you provided is the Kisfaludy I am researching. If not certain can you think of a way to determine with certainty? I appreciate your help!

Scott
This article confirms VJK's data. Look at the page 220, Gröller => vitéz Kisfaludy.

Acording to Sándor Szakály in A magyar katonai felsö vezetés 1938-1945 then he changed his name from Gröller to Kisfaludy on 6th June 1929
