Am I the only one that thinks Romania was a more important ally than say Italy?...think about it. Italy got Germany in all kinds of problems, the desert war, Greece, the 1943 armistace; but Romania on the other hand...they took Odessa, had valuable oil supplies, supplied the second largest Axis army of the war...but for some reason Italy gets the limelight even though didn't accomplish as much as Romania.

A lot of people are ignorant of the effort of both Italy & Romania during WW2 due to the dire amount of good information around in English. Bar for a few exceptions they all fall into the stereotypical failings.

There's an interesting Poll going on between those who back Finland and those that back Romania as the most important axis ally at the moment, though strangely everone overlooks Japan

I suppose the only reason people overlook Japan is because they are simply thinking about the European theater. Japan was definitly Germany's best ally, but as far as Europe, I would say Romania, Finland, and then Italy.

Actually the poll is about the most important ally of Germany against the USSR 1941-1944.
BTW, interesting choise to limit the years of the poll to 1944...
If asked from Germans 1945, Finland and specially Romania wouldn´t been rated very high.

Thanks for the links.

Italy is generally regarded as more important than Rumania because the English and to a lesser extent the US, fought the Italians but, apart from bombing raids, not the Rumanians. The weight given to fighting the Afrika Korps and oh yes the Italians in english publications reflects this. Hence the massive numbers involved on the Eastern Front gets less attention than 3 or so german divisions in Afrika. The contributions of for example the Rumanians are barely noticed except where they are used as an excuse for german defeats.

It was not until I read the Axworthy book that I gained a good grasp of the size of Rumanian efforts. Perhaps this should be made compulsory reading for those interested in WW2 :)

Yes. Unfortunately the problem is time. We hope to bring it online as soon as possible. The other two will function in parallel for a a while, until we transfer all the info.

Hey Victor, are you the dude that runs the Romanian Airforce site? I was the guy that wrote "There's nothing I love more than Romania..." in the forum. Good to see you here.

If your not him, then I just wasted a whole post.
