Hungarian Army in invasion of Yugoslavia?
Hungarian Army in invasion of Yugoslavia?
I am looking for disposition of III Hungarian Army troops in field at time of German invasion and Hungarian invasion.
Re: Hungarian Army in invasion of Yugoslavia?
To start with - just a basic map showing advance of Hungarian units.

Leo, are you sure it's 2nd, not the 1st Cav. Brigade on your map?

Re: Hungarian Army in invasion of Yugoslavia?
The original map shows 1.Gk.dd., 2.Gk.dd., and 2.Lov.dd.
(Sorry, I don't have a scanner yet.)
Cheers

I see.
I was sure 1st Cav. was part of Mobile Corps and 2nd Cav. was part of V Corps.
So either there is an error somewhere or they switched Cav. brigades around for some reason.
OOB on your web page shows 1st Cav. as part of Mobile Corps as well...

Re: Hungarian Army in invasion of Yugoslavia?
Excellent. Thanks Greg and Leo.
From my earlier search i also have the 2nd Cav advancing as unit of V Corps which makes me wonder looking at map - size is good Leo - if it's attached formation wasn't changed. I haven't found any information on advancement of 1st Cav, it seems to have stayed in reserve.
Greg in your map it shows that I Corps also advanced but i don't have in my earlier data/research any unit from I Corp moving in.
- have had the 2 mobile brigades going Vukovar, Valijevo 19 April (some info i found said they went Novi Sad in 13 April but i found that strange)
- parachute drops of 1st airborne battalion on Vrba 12 April and Srboban after.
Other committed units:
V Corps
14 Inf.Brigade
2 Cav.Brigade
IV Corps
12 Inf.Brigade
11 Inf.Brigade - attacked Baranya - in map is separated from IV Corps, was it independent?
10 Inf.Brigade

Re: Hungarian Army in invasion of Yugoslavia?
Unfortunately I don't have access to any primary source documents, it's all secondary sources. So there might be some errors/differences difficult to resolve.
Kiss Gabor Ferenc in his book "Operations of Mobile Forces of The Royal Hungarian Army 1938-1941" also puts 2nd Cavalry brigade as part of Mobile Corps (as on Leo's map).
But he cited a primary document that 2nd Cavalry brigade was located in the area of Csikéria, Kelebia, Tompa; which is not in the area Leo's map shows, but directly next to it, further to the North-East.
Later he writes that 1st Cavalry brigade was late to arrive and did not participate in initial advance.
Perhaps that's why 2nd Cavalry brigade was moved from V Corps to Mobile Corps (only my guess).
11 Inf.Brigade was directly under 3rd Army command.

Re: Hungarian Army in invasion of Yugoslavia?
Maybe an difference on reference dates explain map changes ? I got the 11 Bde wrong now it is fine.
Do you know anything about forces that remained in occupation?
I have 15 Inf Bde unknown when it entered former Yugoslav territory, it was there in 1942 at least, also I Hussar Regiment that stayed there up to end of 1941 or thereabouts.

I think the Yugoslav division in Baranya Triangle facing Hungarian 11th Infantry Brigade is not Daljska Division, because division under such a name did not exist.
I believe it was Osijek (or Osiječka) Division.
Please check the page 53

Also, it's not Vrbska, but Vrbaska Division, named after river Vrbas in Bosnia.
