Ethnic composition in Carpatho-Ukraine in 1940

Post by CroGer » 03 Nov 2017 01:12

Hello,

In 1940, Hungary conquered the Carpatho-Ukraine. Is there any reliable data on how the ethnic composition of that region was in 1940?

How many hungarians, slovaks, germans, romanians and ruthenians lived there?

It was annexed by Hungary in March 1939.

1930 census (in Czechoslovakia) had these numbers:
Ukrainians / Ruthenians - 62%, Hungarians - 16%, Jews - 13%, Czechs and Slovaks - 4.8%, Germans - 1.9%, Romanians - 1.8%
I’m reading a book about anti-gravity. It’s impossible to put down.

You are right, Hungary snatched the Carpatho-Ukraine in 1939, Norther-Transilvania was taken in 1940.

Here is something I have calculated:

Czechoslovakia 140.446 km²
https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prvn%C3%AD_republika
Population:
14.800.000 (1938)

Protectorat Bohemia & Moravia (1940): 49.363 km², 7.380.000
Republic Slovakia (1940): 38.055 km², 2.653.053

German annexed part of Czechoslovakia in 1938:

28.996 km², 3.408.449 citizens

Hungary in 1938

Slovakia: 10.380 km², 853.580 citizens. 503.890 hungarians, 8.947 germans, 272.145 slovaks, 1.825 Ruthenians, 40.622 others, 26.151 jews
Carpathoukraine: 1.453 km², 139.140 citizens. 86.110 hungarians, 17.855 slovaks, 35.175 ruthenians, germans ?, Jews ?

Hungary 1939

Carpatho-Ukraine: 11.930 km², 622.000 cizitens. 37.320 Hungarians, germans ?, 470.000 Ruthenians, 2.600 others, 100.000 jews, 12,777 romanians
Das Ungarn 1939 neu angegliederte Gebiet hatte 12.000 km² mit 622.000 Einwohnern, von denen allerdings nur 6 % ungarischer Muttersprache waren

Combined: 140.177 km², 15.056.222
