Romanian opinion about German support

#1

Post by CNE503 » 10 Sep 2019, 10:02

Hello,

I did some scholar research about the German military mission in Romania in 1940-1941, mainly from German archives. But I didn't find a lot of elements concerning the Romanian point of view concerning this help.
Could anyone please give me some advice about sources that deal with this topic? I possess Axworthy's book Third Axis Fourth Ally yet. I'm taking everything relevant, even if it's in Romanian.

Thank you for your help in advance.

From a Romanian perspective, the goals of the foreign policy was to restore the Greater Romania project, threatened by the USSR, Hungary and Bulgaria.

The USSR was a great power, beyond their reach or influence up until the Barbarossa. And they were slowly drifting into an alliance with Hungary and Bulgaria. Long story short, German military help to Romania exceeded those that were given to Hungary and Bulgaria, but it didn't serve the foreign policy.
"Everything remained theory and hypothesis. On paper, in his plans, in his head, he juggled with Geschwaders and Divisions, while in reality there were really only makeshift squadrons at his disposal."

Hello Peter,

As I said, I wrote an extensive scholar study about that. So I'm well aware of the context and the whereabouts of the German military mission.
My question is: has anyone some good sources about the Romanian perspective about the interest, the results, of this mission, regarding their own military strength and efficiency?

Sure. It's in French.

"La mission militaire allemande en Roumanie (septembre 1940 – juin 1941) : une action de préparation militaire opérationnelle au service de la grande stratégie allemande" (translation: the German military mission in Romania [September 1940-June 1941]: a military mentoring and training program in support to the German grand strategy), by Major Loïc Bonal.
Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Paris, June 2019, 301 pages.

If you read French, I can send it to you on demand.

No one about a Romanian testimony about German military support in 1940-1942?

It wasn't such a deep cooperation. Germans initially refused to sell Czech tanks to Romania, trained some divisions (about 3, I will look later for document) and didn't delivered any weapons (only after Stalingrad).

Some articles I found some time ago touching this subject:

Romanian German military cooperation: Ski Detachment Ioan Rotta
https://www.academia.edu/28766344/Coope ... onel_Rotta

Romanians in German army:
https://www.academia.edu/28766342/Roman ... _1941-1944

Both .pdf can be translated with google translate, let me know if you have issues with them (I'll probably translate Rotta's document anyway at the end of this week and post it here).

Probably you already know this but I am linking it just in case:
https://ndupress.ndu.edu/Portals/68/Doc ... iNardo.pdf

German missions assisted the training of 6th, the 7th and the 8th Infantry Divisions, the 1st Armored Division and the 1st Mountain Brigade in 1941 but this stopped after the start of Barbarossa.

I will look in some paper books in Romanian I have concerning Odessa and Stalingrad but will take a while :)

Hello steppewolf,

I'm sorry but it seems that I forgot to thank you for these documents. Let me correct this right now, hoping it is never too late to act well: many thanks for these interesting documents.
If you have some other references concerning the Romanian opinion, particularly regarding the military establishment one, about the German support (with a particular emphasis on the early stages of this support, between October 1940 and October 1941), please feel free to let me know what they are. I'm taking everything, even if it is in Romanian (though in English or even German would be much more easier for me).

Thank you again.

Hello CNE503,

don't mention it, glad I could help.

I want to highlight a new book (is available since this Monday, 7th September) concerning the equipment of Romanian Armed Forces during WW2; there's a lengthy chapter on Interwar period and there is a lot of information on German support (or lack of at some point):

I'd be interested in having your opinion about this book when you will have read it.
Especially concerning the Romanian opinion about German support in 1940-1941.

I did read half of it and the pages about 1940-1941 period but the information is scarce on this topic, nothing new compared with what I already found on internet.
