Romanian Army & Stalingrad

Although there has been much critusism of the Romanian Army for their performance at Stalingrad, due to their poor equipment, organization and quick disintegration of force, they were placed in a position along the front where they couldn't successed. Positioning them on both flanks of the German Sixth Army, then ignoring intelligence reports of Soviets forces massing against them was not one of the Fuhrer's wisest ideas. Overlooking their distrust of Hungary during the war and how that affected some of their unit dispositions, when you look at the large numbers of troops Romania committed to the Eastern Front and the casualties they sustained throughout the conflict, they were truly one of Nazi-Germany's best allies.

Only 3,000 Romanians from the two divisions survived and were taken prisoners inside Stalingrad.

No major Hungarian units were involved in the actual battle for Stalingrad itself but the Hungarian 2nd Army held the far northern flank which contributed to the eventual collapse of the German southern front.

The 2nd Hungarian Army was, more exactly, near Voronezh.

South of Voronezh, between the 2nd German and 8th Italian Army.
The Hungarian Army was attacked from the Uriw bridgehead (12 January 1943), from Schutsje bridgehead (14 January 1943), from their right flank (behind the Italians were also Soviet troops, just the Alpini corps were operational in January) and from their left flank - the 2nd German Army retreated, but they didnt permit to retreat for Hungarian III Army Corps (If I remember correctly, the 9th Light Division standed near Don till 29 January - the Soviets were in their back since at least a week)

On 24th November 1942, general von Paulus assembled a force of 220 panzers with the hope that Hitler would approve a counterstrike in the south-western sector, to liberate the axis forces from Soviet encirclement... But Hitler refused saying:

"Wayt your liberation from outside. Just keep the city as much as you can"...

Actually, Paulus received very little help... Paulus was not stupid, he just executed the Fuhrer's commands... In the hope that would be freed.

In Stalingrad, were trapped 21 German divisions - 3 armored and 2 motorized and 2 Romanian divisions. A total of aproximately 250.000 men.
In the town were also aproximately 50.000 Soviets, who were fighting a guerilla warfare, supported by a super heavy artillery. But all round the city, a rought total of 2.000.000 Soviets were reinforcing their comrades in Stalingrad.
