What to see in Sofia?

Post by Rodrigo » 22 Oct 2002 17:46

On next weekend I travel to Bulgaria, and I would like to know what to see in the city (memorials, war cemeteries, museums) related with WWII.

Oh,come on,that is just not true.Sofia can be a very fun city. There is a lot of clubs and bars. There is a few interesting museums.Maybe you just need a good guide to show you a good time.

Well, there is plenty of war memorials but they are all dedicated to the Red Army, which I find disgraceful.People are actually still worshiping an occupying power that represents the most bloody, vicious and canibalistic regime of all times. But that's off topic :D
Anyway, the military museum is not bad(actually I am not even sure that it is still open, maybe it went bankrupt),try to go and check it out. What are you doing there anyway?

The museum is still working and there are plenty of things to be seen there.Recently I read in a newspaper that they have put an old T34 and some rather new tanks.Like Brannik said there are some nice bars and clubs, but Sofia is not the best city in Bulgaria to do sightseeing in.

Hello!

I am fromSofia and according to me there are many things to see.

1. The Military-Historical Museum - in its new location on the back of the Military Academy /'Tcherkovna' street/ - in te huge yards you'll see 3 German StG vehicles, one rare PZ-IVJ, Hotchkiss tank, Praga tank /used in the Wehrmacht, too/, several T-34, one T-55, T-72, one SAU Soviet self propelled gun, Opel Blitz bus, Mercedes wartime trucks, one Kettenrad halftrack, Horch staff car, FAMO tractor, many different German WWI and WWII artillery guns and Flak; also severa other German an Italian WWII militar tractors and vehicles. About the military vehicles and guns from the USSR - not going to list, too many! :) Also missiles, 3-4 jet planes, etc. etc. From the display halls is yet ready only one, but a huge and interesting display about the Balkan wars in it.

2. National Historical Museum in the Boyana Residence - it is a huge general museum, but also interesting WWI and WWII items.

3. British military cemeteris - they are in the North-West corner of the Central cemeteries of Sofia. They are WWI as far as I know, small but beautiful British cemetery. German cemetery - sorry, do not know.

4. Nightlife - many great pubs and night clubs :)

5. Other museums - like the Crypt in the Alexander Nevski cathedral, in which displayed great many unique icons; Natural History Museum, etc. etc.

That the most interesting I think :) If you need a guide for the Military Museum and the National-Historical - just drop an E-mail, I'll be glad to be :)
