Hi Bachmann,

the german designation was and still is "Kradmantel". Originals are rarely in good condition, but there are good "reproductions" of varying quality.

Example: https://www.zenker-militaria.de/Kradmantel

The so-called "Kleppermantel", which was still often worn in the 1960s and 1970s, is somewhat comparable.

Kleppermantel: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klepper_(Mantel)

Similar coats were also used by the Bundesgrenzschutz and the Bundeswehr in later years...

The problem is the waterproof coating of the coats, if this is not maintained regularly, then this coating becomes brittle and flakes off.
This is one of the reasons, why very few, if any, original coats survived.
Used for civilian purposes, the coats were put on after 1945, worn out...

Hans
P.S. The correct designation was "Feldgendarmerie", with the later sub-designations before 1945.

Our friend Rainer bought a hand-sewn fur coat at a flea market in Oldenburg in the 1980s.

Very obviously a coat pieced together by a German prisoner of war in Russian captivity.

The coat stank, it was very heavy, you could see what this coat had been through.

The price was irrelevant, Rainer was concerned about his father, who was allowed to survive in such a coat on the Eastern Front at that time.

I wouldn't have bought this fur coat, the smell, the age, that was too much for me personally.

Have you ever put on a German soldier's gas mask, felt the old smell, it's horrible.
This smell does not go away, it is more than unpleasant to put on such a gas mask, even decades later...
