Unfortunately this seems to be the case with most, but not all, of the niche market cottage industries. A few years ago I tried to cobble together a distributorship of hard to find reenacting items using my connections with old time fakers. I could get them to produce a few sample pieces to show potential customers, but I could rarely get them to commit to actually producing their wares when I ordered them. They did great work... when they got around to it.

CTAPOCTA wrote:I ordered jackboots from Tom Mattimore back in Dec 2008. It finally was delivered in March 2009.The quality was very very poor, I was under impression he was very drunk when making those boots, I wish I would take pictures before sending them back. I had to return it, he said no problem, will send me refund. It`s been more than 3 month since then but still no refund. Last week he lied to me again for the 7th time that he will put the check in the mail. He didn`t want to take credit card payment (now I see why), Paypal garantees money back only for 30 days (took 100 days to make product). What can I do? It`s a $250.-
I think a "vacation" to Mattimore Harness should be planned. Maybe by a bunch of us.

I was fortunate in that I paid him with Visa. Now I am thinking about disputing the charge. I'm tired of hearing "the boots are in the mail", because at this point I know full well that they are not. If they dont arrive tomorrow by lunchtime, I'm filing a complaint when I get back from the WV living history event this weekend.
just pathetic

I think Schnert pretty much hit the nail, right on the head.. Unfortunately this happens from time to time.. Just a few years ago, I remember he did great work tuning up my Grigsby low and dice shakers with new split peg soles, nails, and everything.. I never would have thought that he would've pulled an IFG play and just take the money and run.... Such a total shame..

I heard from another respected vendor that Mattimore has drinking problems. PayPal washed their hands because transaction took more than 45 days ago. PD won`t let me file Police report. Any other suggestions?
I`m not whining, just trying to get my dinero back, still have no jackboots and have no other $250.- to shed.

Small claims may be your only recourse.

I had to eat a $400 loss in cimilar circumstances from a company called ICE Tactical in Canada. Sorry CTAPOCTA, but your chances getting your money back are slim at best.

Well, well. the boots finally arrived. the toes are in fact more rounded, like a mickey mouse toe, and despite sending actual outlines of my feet, they are considerably larger than I'd like. after adding 9mm felt soles, my feet stopped sliding around inside, but they are still about a size and a half too long. furthermore, there is a uneven spot on the back of one boot which will create a good blister in 10 minutes or less of running around. all in all, I'd call them a 7/10

So, we are reduced to second hand gossip and slander? I can understand being upset over someone taking money and then not following through with the deal, but your posting is very distasteful and childish.

gents:

have been away for a couple of days, please DO NOT post slanderous posts on people's personal behavious or 'rumours' in regards to vendors or members on this forum. it not only appears as childish, but it's of very low taste.

there's no spot here on this board for this kind of low brow behaviour.

I've had similar problems. Ordered off for a pair of lowboots, sent foot tracings, ended up getting boots that fit my buddy - he wears a 12.5, I wear a 14. Now LB is no longer making boots, it seems. Does anyone have a source for 14's?

actually the 11 1/2s I just got from him are almost 14s. A size 13 insole slipped in with room to spare!

This reminds me of a Jean Baptiste Greuze painting.
