SS smock drawstring Q needs A
SS smock drawstring Q needs A
Komeraden,
As we know, typical collar drawstrings used on SS smocks were generally made out of flat rayon 4mm cords or some similiar material as those found on the repros that we use today.
As I slowly prepare for the GAP I notice that my drawstring is shot and wish to replace it, but with what?
I have thought about possibly using a length of rawhide lace or since reproduction or original flat rayon 4mm cords aren't so easy to come by, how about using a 108 cm length of olive drab cotton lace?
Just thought I would throw it out there and get some feedback before I proceed forward with a solution..
Danke!

You might still find some at 1944militaria.com. He had some of the 'OD' and black ones. Saving that, wear none at all. Or a thin piece of rawhide as can be found at craft stores for leather projects, or if you're lucky enough a match of your existing drawstring at a sewing/fabric store.

Komeraden,
On Drew's recommendation I decided to try some rawhide, and here are the results. I will have to say that I am quite happy with it so what do you think?

Oil it to darken it some, I think it would look much better.
Also, Walmart sells 3mm hemp cord that looks very much like cord used in rucksacks; I think that would look better IMHO. It can also be used for many other purposes.

OK, not trying to be snarky, but that is not rawhide. Rawhide is literally that: raw hide. Same as what you give your dog to chew, except it has been rolled for them. What you have there are leather shoe/boot laces.
Looks fine, but let's call it what it is.
Thanks!

to be honest, thats probably a very common thing to lose in the war and probably anything would be correct.

A boot lace, string, cord, anything you can lay your hands on would do.

Bringing this old thread up, but replace it with white plastick zippers like in their Fliegerboots
