Sewing tips for cuff titles?

Hello,

I have a LB tropical tunic and want to add a cuff title(Afrika). Thinking of doing an Italian theatre theme, if only to make my friends in FSSF happy(Ontario/New York section).

Can any of you learned gentlemen give any tips or words of wisdom on the best way to sew them on. I know that alot of people will suggest having someone do it but I figure that alot of soldats did the job themselves? Information on how to deal with the ends would be most helpful?

I have read that they are 14-15cm from the tunic cuff to the bottom of the cuff title but beyond that was wondering if there was a prescribed manner as to they're positioning on the tunic?

SS cuff titles should be sewn 14-15cm up from the cuff of the left sleeve on regular tunics, or just under the edge of the turnback cuff on a greatcoat or Officer bluse. The ends of the cuff title are simply overlapped on the inside of the cuff.

Sewing titles by hand is a pain in the butt! Its hard to keep them straight.

I would say some Soldats sewed their own but the other 99% were sewn on by company/unit tailors.

Thats just the info I needed. I wasn't sure about the ends if there was a prescribed method.

First, "baste" the title in position with one inch across stitches, so you can remove those annoying pins. As for the ends, fold them underneath themselves with the folded edges touching "face to face", and "baste" them into position. Finally, "whip stitch" the title into place, using from 1/4" to 1/3" between each stitch, and then remove the "basting" thread.
Practice on a different cuff with a different cuff title first to get some practice in.

I wrapped the cuff title around the sleeve, and made sure it was exactly in place. In then took a stapler and stapled the cuff title to the tunic. I hand sewed it, and it came out perfect, believe it or not.

Here's another question on the subject:

On a turnback cuff on an officer's jacket, should the cuff title be sewn onto the turned back, outer layer of the cuff only? Or should the needle go through both layers of the cuff?
