Berghof Souvenirs and Kitsch Items
Re: Berghof Souvenirs and Kitsch Items
Here`s a tile which had bought friends of mine at a flea fair in the CZ. Really nice piece of Wachenfeld ,which I have never seen before. The seller wanted a lot of money coz "Rosenthal" ,he had no idea about haus Wachenfeld.

Hi Pavel,
Thanks for posting these photos!
I have seen many of the Rosenthal souvenir plates like this ... but this is the first tile I have ever seen. I would say that it has to be worth more than one of the plates.

Servus Geoff !
That`s exactly the same what I said to my friend ,I have seen a few Wachenfeld plates ,many period pictures ,but a tile like this.... wou I was really suprised when I got these photos. I`m very happy that it was bought by my friend who`s big OSB fan ,then if it had bought by just some auctionarius. Good to know that a tiles like this exists and moreover occurring in the CZ. I must be much more appreciative while walking through flea fairs:)

This beautiful Haus Wachenfeld model (13" x 8.5", 10.5" tall) must be quite rare - it recently sold on ebay for $436.00.
Yikes - I guess I'll have to stick to the beer steins and postcards!

Here is an Obersalzberg stein that is NOT made by Wekara - at least it doesn't have any Wekara markings. The Berghof picture isn't quite as detailed as on the Wekara steins.

This may not exactly fit into this category, but I recently came across these Berchtesgadener Hofbraeu "Bierdeckel" (beer coasters) from the SS Kantine (mess hall) Obersalzberg - probably not your typical "Souvenir and Kitsch Item" a tourist would bring back from a visit to the Obersalzberg!

The coaster on the right is not necessarily period. I have one which I brought home in 1979. The one on the left is most impressive!

the left one`s really cool. Just to make me sure, is it really period one?

The "BHB" logo is on the back of the "SS Kantine..." coaster (I used two of them for the scan) - sorry, I should have included that in my description. I assume they are authentic, I have seen them listed for sale on German militaria sites ( http://www.beck-militaria.de/1933-1945/ ... 13534.html - of course I know that doesn't prove anything....!).
I tried to list one for sale on ebay, they did NOT like that at all.....

Re: Berghof Souvenirs and Kitsch Items
Here's another one that doesn't quite fit into this category - but I guess is was a "souvenir" available for purchase to members of the Stollenbaukompanie. It is a tile, about 6x6", mounted to a metal backing plate. I assume it is an original period piece, since such items would have been illegal to produce in post-war Germany. The "1943-1945" makes me wonder, though - were they really still printing SS souvenir tiles in '45? Has anybody seen smilar tiles for other SS units?

As they are attached to a walking stick, they are difficult to catch so the quality is a little poor.
The first one. Purchased in 1996

The 2nd one. Purchased in 1998.
Identical to the first one and also near enough identical to Geoff Walden's, although Geoff's looks older and weathered.

The 3rd one. Also purchased in 1998.

The stocknagel of the berghof, would that be post war?

The first two, certainly. I'm pretty sure the third one is as well, as these are very common and generally in really good shape, like even unused.

Re: Berghof Souvenirs and Kitsch Items
Since I started this thread, some more items have come my way.
This item I feel must be unique. It is a metal printing block advertising the Führer's "favorite flower." Not sure if this was advertising a specific florist, or what. It is a "negative" image for printing; I flipped it for this view. It reads, top to bottom: Adolf-Hitler-Haus am Obersalzberg, Die Lieblingsblume des Führers, aus seiner Heimat / Nür Echt mit dieser Schutzmarke (Only Genuine with this Trademark). This rather primitive painting of Haus Wachenfeld must have been painted from a postcard - its details are rather inaccurate. On the original you can see where a flagpole with a banner (presumably the normal swastika banner) has been painted over. This is the top of a bookmark that came with the 1933 book Adolf Hitlers Wahlheimat - Zweiundzwanzig Zeichnungen von Karl Schuster-Winkelhof. This sugar spoon has an edelweiss on the handle and a view of Haus Wachenfeld from the back with the legend Obersalzberg. BTW, those SS-Kantine Bierdeckels are almost certainly repros (fakes?). I've got a couple too, but I doubt they are genuine.

Re: Berghof Souvenirs and Kitsch Items
This "3-D" wooden plaque is a nice stylized view of the Berghof with mountains behind. It was likely a product of the wood-carving industry in the Ertzgebirge region.
I was finally able to get one of the small metal Haus Wachenfeld banks. I never got one off ebay because they always went for too high, picked off by "piggy bank" collectors (who may or may not know what Haus Wachenfeld was). I found this one on a German toy auction site, and I was the sole bidder.

Re: Berghof Souvenirs and Kitsch Items
Very nice pieces, Geoff. I have a painted wooden version of the Haus Wachenfeld bank, and also a metal (possibly bronze) desktop model of Haus Wachenfeld with lovely detail, mounted on a marble base. There apparently was a lot of money to be made in the 'kitsch' field of endeavor!
