Die Deutsche Wochenschau - research help!?

Postby Scott Fenn » 16 Oct 2014 12:47

Hi Everyone,

I’m really hoping someone here might be able to help me out with this one! I hope this is the best place, if not mods please move :)

I’m desperately trying to track down a set of ‘Die Deutsche Wochenschau’ for my PhD research but I’m having trouble getting in contact with anyone who seems to be selling it. I’ve found a complete set listed here: http://www.dhd24.com/azl/index.php?anz_id=76014640
as well as several other places, but after multiple times of trying I can’t get hold of the seller.

Does anyone have any idea where else I might be able to get hold of a set? Better, does anyone have a copy they might be willing to sell to me or copy for me? I’m more than happy to pay the same price (or similar) to what’s being asked in the above link if so.

I am aware of ‘Through Enemy Eyes’ as well as several other English subtitled collections, but what I’m need is the complete run (without subs is fine, my German’s good )

Suggestions gratefully received!

Cheers,
Scott

Here you go Scott:

I buy from them regularly - fast service and given the age of the material, the quality's not too bad at all.

There is an official site where you can download every available newsreel but the quality is not the greatest.

http://www.wochenschau-archiv.de/index.php?sprache=eng

Handy as a reference though. I am aware of several 'missing' newsreels in 1944 -45 so a full set is not a possibilty.
Lots are posted on Youtube in fairly decent (and downloadable) quality on this US Official(?) channel

Be aware many of the Ebay and other sellers are just selling you copies you can download yourself from the internet and the quality is not the best.
Anyone know of proper digital copies of 1944-45 are available?
The French INR firm seem to have digitised all their captured copies and those versions are very good.

It's also an option to try www.archive.org

Thanks very much for your great responses everyone, much appreciated.

Richard, thanks for the link! – I’ve heard of IHF, although it looks to me as if the most complete set they are selling is $300 which is out of my price range for a bit.

Michael, I’ve been on wochenshau archive before, and I tried to register - but for the life of me I couldn’t get it to work? Have you had the same problem by any chance? The YouTube link is great, thanks, there’s a good few to start working with at least! :)

BramvanS, yes, good thinking, cheers :) – there are indeed a few on there, as well as a myriad of other things which I’ve used for my work in the past, great site.

This is the best Deutsche Wochenschau site I've found so far. 185 newsreels, not surprising as it's Ufa Ton Woche's youtube page:

No, that's not an official Ufa channel at all. It's soliciting "donations" for its "project", which consists of blindly uploading clips taken from its P2P sources, right down to the same incorrect identifications such as labeling Descheg Monatsschau as Die Deutsche Wochenschau. There were much better quality DDW clips on youtube several years ago, that were taken down en masse by Transit Film GmBH. This "Ufa Ton Woche" channel would survive until Transit Film does its next policing sweep.

Sorry, I didn't know that. Thank you for clarifying, Panzerspitze.

Could you tell us where on the internet we can find the best quality Deutsche Wochenschau newsreels? The ideal would be 1080p HD transfers. The U.S. National Archives did just that and made a huge collection of it's newsreels available in beautiful full HD (1080p/24) on its youtube channel:

268 WWI and WWII newsreels nearly all in 1080p available here:
