'And Bormann, I didn't like him at all. He was a dirty pig.' By the end of 1934, the house was surrounded by minefields and SS checkpoints. Rosa said. 'I felt like a prisoner instead of an employee.'
Well aware of the checkpoints but the minefields?

Considering all the tourists and hikers I wonder if this could be correct?
You are correct, Annelie - there were no minefields on the Obersalzberg. Several other details are wrong as well ... either remembered incorrectly, or sensationalized for today's readers.

Thanks Geoff,

I was informed graciously that I had linked to an dubious site.

This one is more appropriate.

Well, at least I remembered something correctly. Having walked all over the Obersalzberg I would like to think it
was safe.

Safe enough for us tourists, I reckon. Although there were some grenades and ammo found in a drain near the Platterhof site a year or two ago. And there are likely unexploded bombs still buried on the OSB, although I believe it has been several years since any were found. The golf course is searched each spring for bomb shrapnel on or near the surface.

Well, bite my tongue ... just today (Tuesday), construction crews dug up an unexploded 500kg bomb beside the Dokumentation Obersalzberg, right outside the entrance to the Gaestehaus/Platterhof tunnel system. Anyone who has walked on the path through the woods, between the former Gaestehaus and the Berghof site, has pretty much walked right over this bomb!

Check out the photo link. The work on the extension to the DokuZentrum sure has torn up that area back by the tunnel entrance.

Reminds me of this photo. The reverse reads "on the way to Berchtesgaden from Hitler's home"

It looks like a slightly different-shaped bomb to the one they found recently, but I guess from the same RAF raid.

Could this have been a Hitler/Berghof presented dagger that has just surfaced in Argentina? I've never seen one such at this one before.

Looks like something H. Gouring might have created?

Never heard of a Berghof presentation dagger. Please, do tell.

Why is this Argentinian hoard even in the news? I don't think I've ever heard why the police were involved with these items, or why the raid that found them was conducted. It just seems odd to me that a big deal is being made about Nazi "artifacts" found in Argentina. Ok, so what? does that really surprise anybody? And they seem to be trying awfully hard to connect those items with "high ranking" Nazi officials. The article even says that such things aren't illegal. So what's so newsworthy here? Sorry if I'm being obtuse. I really don't understand the hype.

The Berghof was use as a backdrop for many presentations (i.e., Knight Crosses, Field Marshal Batons etc.) and I sure a dagger/sword or two to Göring over the years. These items are always news worthy because they are associated with a dark history of the human race.

Of course there's the "rubber-neck syndrome" with anything Nazi. People are curious to see nefarious things. It's a curiosity we all experience as we approach the scene of a bad wreak on the highway.

I think this is why more and more people are interested in learning and experiencing the Berchtesgaden and Obersalzberg areas today. This is a specific area that screams to us saying that there's history here—please pay attention to me and learn from the past and don't come this way again.

History is the greatest teacher.

GREAT photo!
Pretty sure that is Albert Speer's architectural studio in the background.

Oh my goodness! :)

In 2016 i was there with my family, exact at this spot. But well, there are still so many bombs in germany. Every day you can hear it on the radio or on TV.

Two pics from this area. The bomb was found right behind the wall at the left of the pics.

Regards

I was just wondering if some of the bomb craters are still there? When i look at the aerial pictures of the bombing I see some pretty large ones that I think are in the woods now etc? Just curious of any of the craters are still there.

thanks
