Reichskanzlei Thread
Re: Reichskanzlei Thread
Does anyone agree with Mister S ?
I see the object as a transparent bubble, perhaps reflecting some of the nearby environment and I can't " unsee " it.
Certainly I can't see it as the ruined guard house/ air vent in Mister S' photos.
No doubt this is not a bubble, but I can't make any other sense of it except that it may also be an artifact of the photo printing process or deliberately added to the photo for some reason.
I can't imagine why.

OK
Would anyone care to make an overlay/or similar showing the cylinder and cone of this feature?
It still looks spherical to me.

Did you change your mind Greg?

Re: Reichskanzlei Thread
No, I did not. When you actually download the original photo and zoom it in, you will see it is the same structure as on Mister S photo.Did you change your mind Greg?
I don't doubt that. But when I checked some books, they have this conical object as watch tower (Beobachtungsturm), not the air tower, (there were two).
I also looked at that building on the left and I think others were right, everything points to Hotel Esplanade on Bellevue Str. (location on the aerial photo). But looking at pre-war photos, it seems it had one more floor.... Unless ground floor is not visible on the photo (obstructed with ruins on Hermann Goering Str.)
Re: Reichskanzlei Thread
Thanks Greg
I guess I will have to accept your interpretation , but I still can't see it.
From where can I download the original? Maybe it will reveal more detail to me.

Re: Reichskanzlei Thread
I agree with the possibility that the guard tower/vent tower/whatever it's function(s) was/were could well be the object in Mister S's post-war photo. Both the garden entrance block and the tower were substantial, reinforced buildings created to withstand a great amount of punishment, and that is possibly why those pieces remained in Mister S's photo.

Re: Reichskanzlei Thread
It's not a bubble and certainly not transparent as it was made from steel reinforced concrete!
We can't see the cone for the same reason, it's right behind on the other side, as the whole structure turned 45 degrees..

Re: Reichskanzlei Thread
Just found a very interesting and recently created "Then and Now" video on the Reich Chancellery (uploaded in Feb. 2018), done using impressive and creative editing techniques.
They also have plenty of other videos just like it of Berlin and other WWII sites in Germany, which can be found in the description of the video linked above.

Here are some pictures of the construction of the Mosaikhalle in the Reichskanzlei. I think I may have posted this link a while back, but I found it again as I was browsing my collection, and it was too impressive not to share a few snips.

Re: Reichskanzlei Thread
I read recently (from a Russian source) an account of a visitor to the Reich Chancellery shortly after the end of hostilities in Berlin. He noted great devastation and signs of savage defence and so on, however I have never read any accounts of fighting inside the building. I seem to recall the Russians more or less strolling in to an empty shell. Has anyone else read anything about the defence of the New Reich Chancellery?
