Re: Berghof Souvenirs and Kitsch Items
Nice thread Geoff, here are some additions.
The items are not mine, i found them at the Documentation Center Obersalzberg, and took some pictures of it.
Item 1,
House Wachenfeld, made out of 63,000 matchsticks.
Made in approximately 13 months, 2,160 hours.

This little Haus Wachenfeld coin bank was on ebay Germany a few days ago - according to the item description about 3.5" X 3", 2.5" tall.

Geoff Walden wrote:These little mugs are pretty common now, at least in Germany. I've picked them up for just a few Euro at flea markets. They are stamped on the bottom WEKARA, which was a mark of Wilhelm E. Krumeich aus Ransbach, a maker (or finisher) of many different items like this. I have seen WEKARA mugs also from Munich and Nürnberg in the Third Reich period (the Nürnberg mug shows "Ad. Hitler Platz" on the side).
There are several different varieties and sizes of these Obersalzberg mugs - four or five, at least. Some show a scene of Berchtesgaden, some a scene of the Königssee, or even Bad Reichenhall. On some, you can see the swastika flag at the Berghof, but not on others. The molds were obviously different for some of these - different lettering and different details in the Berghof itself.
Geoff
I recently got this little Wekara mug (too small to call it a "stein", less than 4" tall and about 3" across at the top) that shows the Berghof (without the flagpole), Berchtesgaden and the Koenigssee - just like the bigger ones.
It looks brand new - when did Wekara stop making them? I assume they were still available long after the war, just like other Berghof souvenirs.

One of mine is just like that. For the ones that show the flag, I have assumed that they stopped making them by the end of the war. The others? - I don't know. I have no idea how long they may have been made. There were certainly a lot of them on the market!

Here are a few more Haus Wachenfeld items from past ebay listings - hope it is ok to post them here even though they are unfortunately NOT part of my collection.

One more, this is not a painting but a "Gobelin" (tapestry), claimed to be from the estate of a lady who worked as a secretary at the Obersalzberg:

I wish I could have gotten that painting - it went for a lot more than I would want to pay. But I did get the little schnapps glass.

Good for you - I'm always glad when someone on the forum gets these things!Geoff Walden wrote:I wish I could have gotten that painting - it went for a lot more than I would want to pay. But I did get the little schnapps glass.
Was the Haus Wachenfeld picture an original painting or a print? IIRC the seller did't seem to be sure about it.

Come to think of it, I think that one was a print, not a painting - I think I was thinking of another item.
I didn't see the tapestry - was that on ebay?

Geoff,
Sorry about the late reply. Yes, it was on German ebay - I actually ended up with it, paid WAY too much of course. Certainly a unique piece, we'll see what it looks like when it arrives.

I'm glad you got it, Peter!
I hope none of us forum members ever end up bidding against each other ... ebay.de is no longer the "secret" that it used to be (and the prices have sure risen in the past 10 years too).
