#421

Post by Jeroen7 » 08 Feb 2015, 18:18

After seeing so much of the field and surroundings, let's conclude our search on the Zeppelinfield with the Allies arriving on the field.
The swastika is in a state of being blown up soon...

Thanks, Jeroen, for an excellent series of "then and now". In researching the last video did you come across any information regarding the wrecked Sherman tank in the arena? This subject was exhaustively investigated earlier in this thread and the conclusion seem to be that a lone German soldier might have hit the tank with a Panzerfaust at extreme range. Max posted a pic of a fallen German soldier with the tank in the background. Geoff Walden suggested that the wrecked tank might gave been moved and the location is shown in the attachment. Accordingly any further information would be most welcome before we write this one off as one of many mysteries of war!

I saw the post regarding the tank, but did not do any further research about the photo.

Post by Jeroen7 » 12 Feb 2015, 19:10

We are leaving the Zeppelinfield and the Nazi Rally Grounds and go back to the city.
A city where most of its center was destroyed in just one hour by... air raids!

That might be the tank - thanks!

At the bottom of this page is a link where you can download a very good report in English, regarding plans to refurbish and interpret the Zeppelinfeld.

Thanks PF for the pic and info about the mystery tank - it's certainly a strong possibility. I had just about given up trying to ascertain details as to the story behind the the wrecked Sherman tank at the Zeppelin arena. I have tried two sources in the USA. One was a museum where a group of enthusiasts had restored a Sherman to working order. The curator said that he would pass the word around, but it got no further. The other was a senior officer in the 3rd US Cavalry that seemed to be interested in WW2 tank history, but again it eventually drew a blank. So with the pictures posted by Max of the fallen German soldier and your information about 2nd Lt. Winston Blythe and Pvt. Charles R.Johns being killed when their tank was knocked out at Nuremburg, we possibly have an historical conclusion to the mystery.

Does anybody know whether a Panzerfaust rocket would actually penetrate the armor plating of a Sherman tank?

Hi Paul,

As for your question ... yes, easily. (Many Shermans were knocked-out in Germany in the final weeks of the war by Panzerfausts)

One place to search about the 756th Tank Bn. at Nürnberg would be their unit records (if any) at the US Army Military History Institute (USAMHI) at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. I used to live near there and did a lot of research there. If we could find someone who could go there in person and look up the 756th Tank Bn., it would be a great help. I could not find any reports for the 756th online, after February 1945.

I did find a forum thread that says this was a 756th Tk Bn tank, but no backup references or documentation.

JUST FOR THE RECORD:
it was J Duncan who discovered the pic of the dead German soldier and the Sherman tank.
I only posted it to illustrate a point about its position.

J. Duncan wrote:It very well could be (taken from grandstand angle, now pointed in opposite direction)...below is the kindle book version of Heigl's book. If you click on "beginning" in the "look inside" feature you will scroll to a chapter titled "Battle for Nuremberg" (click on it) - or just scroll down after hitting the "look inside"...it has a photo of a dead german soldier (a paratrooper or volkstürm?) with the tank in the background. amazing photo. The soldier could have been a lone volkstürmer with a panzerfaust who managed to take out the tank but was cut down. I guess there were some minor skirmishes on the parade grounds. Photo proves the tank was blasted and the tank's barrel is aimed in the soldier's direction. I guess the mystery of how the tank originally got there is now explained.
What is not explained is how the tank's position was reversed later on (after the swastika had been blown apart) in the photo at bottom of previous thread page. weird.

Note the dates given for the battle of Nuremberg and the date of the picture

Those photos, including the one of the dead German soldier, have been known for a long time. I believe this is the post that started the discussion in this thread (although the dead soldier doesn't show in this one, but Mannheim mentioned it just after).

http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 0#p1784011

In this post, Dwight Pruitt mentioned both the 756th Tank Bn and 191st Tank Bn.

http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 0#p1787941

It would be nice to verify from period records, what unit this tank belonged to, and how it was knocked out. These two units seem to be a good place to start.

Ooops! My apologies to you, J. Duncan, for giving the credit to Max in error for the pic of the fallen German soldier at the Zeppelin arena. I always try to give credits wherever possible when posting or re-posting a graphic, because by not doing so could cause copyright problems for The Axis History Forum.

My own searches in the USA for the story of the mystery tank, as previously mentioned, yielded very little. I think that the major problem is that the combatants involved at that time have now mostly joined their fallen comrades in the Tankers' Valhalla. So any answer must lie in the records somewhere. However, we do seem to have got some new good leads. Thanks to all of you for your valuable input.

Nürnberg Now & Then - Episodes 15: Trials | Judgement

#435

Post by Jeroen7 » 17 Feb 2015, 23:36

The courthouse for the Military Tribunal is ready. The trial can begin...

Two months ago the first episode of the series Nürnberg Now & Then was released. The series, about Nürnberg before, during and after WWII (1927-1946), was my biggest production series so far and already has found many viewers on the internet. Today I released the 15th and last episode. What a project it was! The hard work in editting and making every comparision as best as possible. But it was well worth making all episodes. Thank you for all positive reactions. Thanx to Geoff of for your assistance in some of the productions and your information on your website http://www.thirdreichruins.com/ which helped me in my productions very well.

My collections of very nice (color) photographs of München and Berlin has grown a lot. O dear, did I just had a thought about making new series? Oh no.... let me take a break now...
