Just one of the many lost monuments in Europe..
I just received a small flag, made in the time the Saar region could vote for getting back to Germany, France or stay independent. When I did some research on the monument shown, I found out this was the so called Winterbergdenkmal in Saarbrücken. This was made to commemorate a won battle between Prussia en France in the 1870 war. It become one of the touristic highlights of the city, used on brochures, coins, ect.
However, in 1939 the Wehrmacht demolished it, on the grounds it could be a aiming point for artillery. Since then it has been partly reconstructed, but the build up never materialized.
