How to Pronounce Goebbels

#1

How should I/how do you pronounce Goebbels? The British pronunciation has an 'r' sound at the beginning, but the American pronunciation is typically (at least from what I've heard from my profs.) is 'go-bulls'. What is the German pronunciation? Thanks.

"r"...?
If you mean the Oe (Ö) sound as in
Goering, not "go-ring".
If I were french maybe Eu as in
fleur de lis or Guernsey.
If you ever come across a danish "Ø",
the same would apply.

From listening to pre-war recordings from Berlin, I think it was pronounced "Gebbels." There were various regional accents, of course, but the Berlin accent -- akin to the classic BBC accent for English -- was the standard pronunciation. IMO, of course!

Watch some Wochenschau mentioning Goebbels. There's a few on youtube. For some reason many old recordings seem to have a high pitch sound. And again I might be wrong as I'm not a Berliner

I think a large part of the high pitched sounds/voices of the announcers at the time was due to the fact that recording technology of that time didn't handle deeper bass tones as well as they do today, therefore in order for an announcer's voice to come through in the clearest possible way on recordings of that era, they chose narrators whose voices were more of a tenor/higher pitched range.

https://clyp.it/uovhi4zc in German during 0:49 time. ( From Die Deutsche Wochenschau ).
In English here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrbyCOYHq8w
This german word is more complex to pronounce: Höhere ( Very guttural )
