Der Bär Communist pub in Berlin

Post by Mannheim » 25 Dec 2019, 23:11

I am currently reading Jay W. Baird's "To Die for Germany" and am up to the murder of Horst Wessel. Does anybody know the address of the Communist pub Der Bär which was formerly in Dragonerstrasse (now Max-Beer-Strasse)? I'd like to do a Then and Now next time I'm in Berlin.

Artur Baer, innkeeper (Gastwirt) had business at Dragonerstrasse 48.
Now the address of the same building is Max-Beer-Straße 50.

Wow! Unbelievable! Thank you so much, Greg. Wish I'd known that when I tramped up and down the street six weeks ago. According to Jay W. Baird it was the pub/inn from which Ali Höhler sortied on his way to kill Wessel. Thanks again!

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing this-- do you have any other information about the house (formerly 48 Dragonnerstrasse? The one pre-bombing during WW2-- I'm working on a documentary and we've been hunting for a photo of that building pre-bombing. Do you know of anywhere I could potentially look? USHMM and UN archive searches have come up dry. Thanks!

You could try Thomas Muhlenkamp or Sven Hintze on Facebook. They both have large collections of pre-war photographs.

Sorry, I got Thomas' name wrong. It's Thomas Muhlberg and the Facebook page is "Roaring Berlin. Die vergessene Metropole":
