German soldier is hit by enemy fire, Ukraine, 1943

v60pih,
The photo is well known, and it was called a fake / photomontage already decades ago. (?)
Likewise, this photo was published in some illustrated books about the Second World War.
German Soldier at the Moment of Death, Ukraine 1943 https://worldwar2database.com/gallery/wwii0209
Perhaps, an expert on historical photos here on the forum can shed some light on this (unresolved) issue, that would be desirable.
